FREEZE: Event ID 41: Kernel Power

Hi Guys, first of all its great that this forum exists!

I have a problem with my 2yeard old HP pavillion dv966ea. I recently upgraded to windows 7 , and everythingh was good for about 2weeks, now it suddenly crashes and I get the same Kernel Power critical error as some other people mentioned. It crashes randomly, sometimes not in hours...but always when I'm starting a certain 3D client poker software, it freezes and I have to use the power button...after the restart even the HP logo at boot up is sometimes in colours. the only way to get back to normal is to run in safe mode and than restart. that normally seems to do it.

I did a lot of research on that, reading all the related articles on this site as well, so here is what I tried so far.

    Clean installed w7 (7600)
    tried with or without updates
tried all the drivers on HP website and experimented with Nvidia drivers
    updated realtek audio drivers

it would be great to know, if this is software or hardware related.(don't have warranty anymore) I hope anyone can help me with that problem.

btw. computer never crashes with the pre-installed vga-driver, but I can't run the poker software with it. My guess is overheating...but I have no idea what or why?

    Thank You and
    Best regards
    cristoph

    Hello and welcome to sevenforums!

I have been running Windows 7 since the alpha days. I am now running the retail version on 4 or 5 computers and one in particular is experiencing the very same issue you are reporting. After searching for information on this event, it is apparent many folks are having this issue. I have read many different ideas how to fix it but none have actually worked. If I find a resolution, I will post it here.

Could definitely be blown capacitors on the motherboard. Check for leaky brown substance coming from them and also for rounded tops instead of flat. It's definitely hardware related. The power is not well to the cpu for whatever reason. Caps regulate power to the cpu, on the motherboard.

    Anyhow, also noticed this.

Google these drivers to find out about them and do your best to get them updated to 2009 versions:

Very much sounds like a capacitor problem now.

If found to be faulty, they are not too difficult to replace for a hobbyist with the proper wattage soldering iron. If you do replace caps, get low esr type with same specs as original.

On the other hand, motherboards are fairly cheap these days. Unless you enjoy the challenge of the hobby itself, you'd probably be better off just purchasing a replacement board.

If you're interested, you can see about the situation here to help you diagnose.

    And from here:

    "System Faults:
    Motherboard fails to POST.
    Memory Test Fails.
System randomly and/or constantly reboots itself.
Fails to fully boot (or even install) Operating System.
    System randomly and frequently freezes.
Random & frequent 'Blue Screens of Death'
BSoD or hard freeze under heavy drive activity (Either RAID, SCSI, or standard ATA)
CPU temps abnormally higher than usual under typical or less load.
*CPU VCORE & other system voltages are erratic or far out of tolerances.
Resetting the system after a freeze and the system will not repost.
(You have to completely power down then power back up.)"

Torrentg is very knowledgeable and you should follow his instructions. However, try this first....

I just wanted to let you know I fixed the problem I was having with screen going black, no response from the PC, power reset to get desktop back. Event Id 41 kernel-power critical error in the event log or BSOD possible. Here is what I did to fix it.

My fix was to go to Device Manager, right click on the video adapter and click update device driver, selecting the option to search automatically for a new driver. It found a new driver and installed it. Problem has not returned. The driver it installed was nVidia GeForce 8.16.11.9107 dated 9/27/09, which is before the October push. I hope this helps you.

    thanks for the replies!

I really think its a hardware problem and it has def. to do with overheating in some kind of way. either the grafics card or the mobo. i tried avery driver out there a couple of times.

after the last clean install of w7..i know can at least see my screen, although I'm on 800x600 pixles. Because when I tried to change it last time, computer froze and when turned back on..it was like a rainbow, I could hardly see windows..had to guess most of the time where the buttons are.(there wasn't even an option to change the resolution anymore after that happend) that leads me to the grafic card.

and as the grafic card is build into the mobo...and I def. won't be able to repair it..it doesn't look good for this £900 baby!

Graphics cards, even onboard, still use capacitors and now what you're saying, even more sounds like they've failed.

Did you check them out to see?

I was trying to get to my mobo.
But I have to get acces from the top, through the keyboard etc. , which I found very hard with the one screwdriver I have here.I didn't get far in 30min (I'm just renting a room in London at the moment)

I also have next to little experience with repairs..and wouldn't be able to do it myself right now.
I'm also a bit scared to mess something up, I need the computer desperatly atm...and for now it runs at least...even though its on 800x600. (I never thought I would say/write that!)

    Update:
I was having that same exact issue and tried updating the nVidia display driver, which made the problem go away fo three days. But, alas, the kernel-power messages came back when the screen went black and locked up the PC.

This time I had the case open and saw what happened. The PSU stoppred, all fans inside came to halt at the same time. Power supply failure. Bingo, time for a new PSU.
