There are various reasons why a system restore point is not working,
    • AV program interference,
    • File system corruption,
    • Hard drive corruption,
    • Program interference,
    • etc.

    axe0,

Is there anything else I can try?

To be honest I don't feel very confident or even able to do all the things you mentioned !!

    Apologies.

No problem, glad you mention it :)
Let's do everything step by step starting with uninstalling Avira.
    1. Click on: Start → Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
    2. Search the Avira product, click with the right mouse button on it and select Uninstall.
    3. Confirm the following product uninstall notification with Yes.
    4. Confirm the activation of the Windows Firewall with Yes.
    5. The Avira Setup will take some minutes to uninstall the product.
    6. Confirm the notification to restart your system with Yes.
    7. After the reboot of your PC the Avira product is completely removed.

From How do I uninstall my Avira Antivirus product?

    axe0,

Might that lead to problems if I have no AV?

No, because that is 50% of the first thing, the other 50% is installing Microsoft Security Essentials :)
