Hello Ethel have you tried these yet? and a few Googles ahve shon tht it may be due to an update too but lets do these first

SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker
Disk Check < if necessary include the /f and /r in the command line as per Option2
Run these in safe mode and the sfc often best run for two to three runs – you can leave out the /r switch in ckdsk if you feel it not necessary
NB SFC best run for about three scans

    if no fix then these

SUPERAntiSpyware | Remove Malware | Remove Spyware - AntiMalware, AntiSpyware, AntiAdware!
    Malwarebytes | Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Premium
    AdwCleaner Download
ADW download from bleeping computer delete any rubbish found with the malware scans
(NB If you are running Kaspersky as the main AV then it might need disabling it when trying ADW because it does not like it at times)

    continual known folder errors

Thank you ICIT2LOL for replying. I have ran sfc /scannow command - system file checker - disk check
a few times, and found nothing. I have also ran Malwarebytes scan, and nothing was found. Also
adware cleaner, and nothing was found. I am using Trend micro internet security 10 at the moment.
Something I found strange in command prompt. It say's net user as guest, but in control panel user
accounts it is administrator. I do not know if this has anything to do with anything. It looks like this
has been going on for a while. I just have not looked at all the events.:)

Hello again, I do have only the one account on the machine, but ages ago I did add another administrator
account, as I was going to change my account to standard user, then changed my mind, and deleted
extra account. I had forgotten about this. Obviously I have done something wrong playing around.
Also with this issue on startup asus logo comes up normal, then goes to starting windows, and then I have
a black screen for about 10 seconds before the logon screen comes on. Once I log in the welcome screen
comes up, and goes to windows very quick.:)

Hmm Ethel I wonder if the hard drive is starting to have a few issues? just how old is it and have you got all your important data backed up just in case?? Because I see that CPU was released in 2012 that's only four years and I am guessing the machine was built around that time or later and the drive was new but it doesn't mean it cold be failing so run a test with this SeaTools for Windows |
    Seagate

Now the other thing that has occurred to me is whether the RAM maybe on it's way out too but test the drive first we'll go from there.

Thank you for spending the time and answering me again. This harddrive is only about 8 months old.
It is a Toshiba DTO1ACA100 ATA device. It has 891 gb's of free space. The driver is Microsoft
6.1.7601.19133. The last Toshiba harddrive only lasted a couple of years. I have downloaded Seagate,
but have not used it yet. Not sure what to do.

Ok Ethel look probably not the drive unless you were very unlucky to pick up a bad one .

It is working out why there is that lag of 10 seconds in the power on to your full screen. I suppose it really isn't that much albeit annoying.
Now personally I am not a great fan of Toshiba drives to be honest having a few Toshiba laptops and external ones as well and I think you will find like all components because it says Toshiba or whatever on them a lot of equipment is made by the same manufacturers and I know I shouldn't say it but being made in China as most things are now one has to wonder at the quality control.

Now depending on your budget I would be inclined to get an SSD of the same size and clone that drive to the SSD - a 500GB SSD out here costs around $235 and I get my stuff in the main from here and I see thay have reduced theor prices again Samsung 850 EVO 500GB SSD SATA MZ-75E500BW MZ-75E500BW | shopping express online thye are a very good supplier and like I said they do supply me with most of my stuff. If you want to go that way then we can get that done without any great hassles.

Now it has just come to me just what have you got set in the Start up tab in msconfig?

To find it do this Start > type msconfig (a light blue box will show up as the System Configuration Utility) > right click run as admin and a small window will open (see my pic) > click on the Start up tab and see what is listed - these are the programs that are loaded on Start up and if there are a lot ticked in that window then it will slow down your machine going to your user / desktop screen and could be the cause of the lag.
Personally I only ever have CCleaner ticked and it makes no difference to the other stuff that has to be loaded as it will do that while the machine is running with the desktop showing - just see my pic . If you untick most of your stuff listed when you go to close that window it will ask you to Apply then hit OK and then ask you to restart or exit without restarting the changes will take place next time you boot up.

If you can send me a pic of that window before you change anything. Let me know if it makes any difference.

Thank you once again. I do not have any knowledge of harddrives. It was a technician who installed
both Toshiba harddrives. I am starting to wonder if they are heaps of crap. Maybe I should not say that,
I don't really know. I am not sure how to take screenshot of msconfig. On startup we have checked
    AMD USB Advanced Micro
    Realtek HD Semiconducter
    Trend Micro

I unchecked the box for the few items running on startup, and it didn't make any difference. I am ready
to give up, because on startup after the asus logo it is jumping straight to logon screen, and bypassing
windows start screen and welcome screen.
