You cannot update the display drivers without getting a temporary black screen, when this happens it isn't a crash.

Hmmm I seem to remember it being similar to the other black screen crashes I have seen occur. It didn't seem like it was going to be temporary. How long should it go black for before I assume something went wrong?

I can try updating it again later.

There is no standard time AFAIK, on my custom build it is only a few seconds.
The last time the display drivers on my laptop were updated, it took some time before the update finished and the black screen was gone.

Okay I have updated the graphic driver. Went well for a couple of days thinking I was in the clear. But this morning the screen went black when it first tried to load Windows (after logging in), so I re-started and began using a program that wasn't an internet browser (where I've always had my issues before), it was windows movie maker. The computer froze, where I couldn't bring up Task manager or anything.

Another note, this is a Gateway desktop and normally when I first press the power button it fires right up, but lately I have to push down on it a couple of times before it boots.

Your boot issue may be related to the BSOD issue.

I've dealt with a similar issue in the past with my dad, the system was resetted and rebuild from scrath but it didn't change the boot issue.
The next step we took was a hardware stripdown, removing everything until you have a system that is the minimum requirement for a pc to boot (don't know how else to describe it atm), it turned out to be a faulty hard drive causing the issue.

I recommend that you do a hardware stripdown on your system, a guide Hardware Stripdown Troubleshooting, hardware diagnostics are not needed.

I ended up taking my computer to a local reputable repair that doesn't charge for diagnostics. They said my hardware was all fine. Even though my hard drive has 11,000 hours on it, they said there isn't an issue with it yet. They told me there were like 100 adware on the computer making havoc and I chose to have them do a factory restore.

Computer shops usually use software tests which are in some situations not reliable (no program is 100%). Though I do not know how your local repair shop has performed diagnostics.

Let me know how it goes.
