Have you got any antivirus installed? I maybe on the wrong angle here but there was the business of certain windows updates not installing if there was no antivirus installed, and causing BSOD's.
Not exactly, there was a business of certain updates not installing if antivirus programs didn't add a certain value to the registry telling the system that they're compatible.

I tried running MemTest86+ while I slept as recommended, but nearly 10 hours later it only completed 3 passes. No errors found with that, but that wasn't the further recommended 8+ passes.

Sorry, I should have warned that the more memory you have the more time the test will take. For instance, 8GB can take up to 8-10h so 16GB could take about a day.

End of year update: So about a week ago I took out one of my RAM sticks so as to MemTest86+ without it needing over a day to complete, but now, despite only running on the one 8 GB stick I've not had any more BSODs. Have yet to see if the problem was with the stick I removed or the slot into which it was placed, but for now things seem good enough. Took me long enough. Been putting off that test due to not wanting my computer to be unavailable for the day as it tested.

Anyway, thanks for the help that was granted unto me by those who replied to this thread.
