Windows 7 ultimate no longer working after bios update

Hi, I bought a new CPU an amd fx 8350 for asus 990fx sabertooth r1.0 with bios 0402

in the support link : SABERTOOTH 990FX CPU Support | Motherboards | ASUS Global

i bought a new cpu amd fx 8350 which needs bios 1604 i downloaded this and flashed my bios on my mother board.

before this windows 7 ultimate was working fine. after a reboot i get to the boot manager and will have windows try and boot showing the windows logo and right after crashes. no bsod or any message on the screen. it just turns to black screen and reboots the computer. i do know the bios has the default settings.

I do remember back when I built the computer that windows 7 utlimate cd wouldn't boot and it was due to it not supporting eufi the new bios tech. i remember I had to go into bios and put int boot settings to allow legacy os's to be supported.

So, I spent 3 to 4 hours looking around in bios and monkeying with it. I looked at the boot settings there's nothing that says secure boot nor enable csm or anything like that. It just shows the hard drive in a booting list and has the setting s to turn on and off the boot logo screen etc. there's nothing there that can change such a setting.

I have 2 computers. one has the sabertooth r2.0 and the one I am currently working on is the 1.0 version.

on my 2.0 version I upgraded the bios a while back but it's different . i never had an issue when I updated my cpu to a new cpu. the parts are the same. I have the same ram, same amd fx 8350 cpu the only difference is that my computer is 2.0 and the one I am working on is 1.0 version.

Yes, this sabertooth 990fx 1.0 does support this cpu after a bios update. the computer does detect the cpu.

It's just that I can get to boot manager where it lists windows 7 ultimate and linux manjaro.

iI can select windows 7 to boot and it just shows text with a logo animation above it of the windows logo and then after a while it restarts the computer.

i tried to go into safe mode booted windows 7 and before the splash screen. I hit f8 and it shows me a list of options one is safe mode which I select and it starts loading files to a certain point and then hangs. I would have to manually reboot the computer.

I really need suggestions and trying to avoid having to reinstall the computer. there shouldn't be anything wrong with the computer. The hard drive is fine and isn't currupted. I can use the bios and the flash utility and actually go into the hard drive file system to see files on the drive. That's how I flashed the rom to the bios to update the bios.

I need advice what i should do next. It's my understanding that there's no issues with the hard drive. All this happened after I updated the bios. Before doing this windows would boot up properly and I had no issues. It just started right after the update.

My guess is that I have to set something in the bios to legacy mode to get it to work because I remember when I built the the computer i had a hard time installing windows 7 onto the system and i remember going into bios and setting a legacy setting which after that allowed the cd to boot and start the windows 7 ultimate installation process.

My feeling is that I have to do this but I do know in the bios I have there's no option in the boot settings. there's nothing in the in the manual about booting in legacy mode.

    any ideas?

Did you previously have it set to IDE or AHCi?

What is the SATA setting now it has reset to defaults following the bios upgrade?

There should a SATA heading of some kind in bios. Whichever mode it is currently set is the wrong one - therefore switch to the other mode.

It is possible that IDE mode might be called "legacy" in your bios.

sata is set to AHCi originally and I did change it from AHCi to IDE and back to now AHCi thinking it could do something for me but nothing changes.

in the bios I can change it from ide to AHCi to raid. this shouldn't make a difference.

My system can detect the hard drive. I can see it in the list and it does load a boot manager called grub which is used in linux. I have 2 os's installed on this machine one is linux manjaro and the other is windows 7 ultimate. the boot manager shows up and you can select windows 7 or linux manjaro.

I select windows 7 and it starts to boot. it loads the splash screen with the windows logo animated and then restarts the computer after awhile.

The thing is that when i go to bios and go into tools and into flashing utility. It shows fs0: which shows a list of the root section of my hard drive and it shows windows folder and files. Which tells me the hard drive isn't corrupted and shouldn't be an issue accessing the hard drive and i shouldn't be having this problem or issue.

the only thing that sticks to my head is that I know windows 7 needs the bios to be in legacy boot mode. but i cannot find anywhere in my bios where I can change this but looking online with most bios by asus they all say it's in the booting section which is where I looked at the start and couldn't find it. I searched the advance area and looked at sata config and saw nothing there other than setting ide, raid etc.

i am thinking to flash a live cd onto my usb stick and try to boot into a linux or a utility tool.
unless someone can give me some ideas what to check.

I can boot windows and hit f8 and get into that screen where it lists boot into safe mode etc but when I do this after a white loading files it freezes and I would have to reboot the system manually.

there's a option that when selected it gives me tools to load like windows recovery which again when running that it at the end says there's a bad driver and it doesn't do much. There's another option to run cmd and it does load in the cmd but not sure if I can search f or devices to run commands onto my hard drive.

I was thinking to use that toole to see if I can do a scan disk and fix any errors of corrupted sectors.

What do you mean flash the bios? do you want me to flash the bios back to the original firmware? or do you mean right now swap out the new cpu with the old one?

the one I used before is a phantom 2 6 core cpu. it worked fine with the older firmware/bios.

I can try and swap the cpu but it shouldn't matter since there's no overheating and the computer works fine in the sense that I can leave the computer on and running in bios all day and no overheating issues with the cpu.

I will give it a try will put old cpu in and see if it works. Just logic tells me it shouldn't be an issues since windows does try to boot. I am really dumbfounded as to why windows crashes at the logo splash screen after a couple of minutes trying to load windows. same goes with safe mode it loads up some drivers / system files and then freezes.

Even though it's quite possible that something could have been damaged, the two times I put a newer Gen CPU in before flashing, (Yea shouldn't have happened a second time) I didn't have anything hurt except my pride. Just put the old CPU in and reflash with the New BIOS, then replace the CPU with the FX. You can do a "Google" and I'm sure find where ASUS tells you to do this.

That's what I did though. The new cpu when I first installed it nothing booted at all no bios nothing worked. I had to take it out and use the old cpu. That's the only way I can flash the bios because the new firemware supported the new cpu the old bios didn't support it. That is why I had to use the old cpu so I can download the newer bios firmeware and then flash the bios when going back into bios menu. That's how I flashed the bios. There's no way you could flash it by using the new cpu since the new cpu can't communicate with the old bios. I needed to use old cpu to install / flash the new bios and then pop out the old cpu and put in the new cpu.

So, do you want me to put the old cpu in and then reflash the bios to the newest version again?

It's true that I did before flashing put the new cpu in and tried running the system. This was when nothing booted. I then looked online and read the manual and found out I needed to upgrade the bios to support it and that's when I popped the new cpu back out and put the old one in. I then booted into windows and went online and downloaded the bios rom image from asus and then rebooted the computer into bios and used the asus flashing utility to flash the bios. I then popped out the told cpu and popped in the new one. The bios shows it's detecting the cpu and everything looks good to me just that windows won't boot after the logo splash screen.

    Does Linux boot up ok?

It is peculiar because what you describe is the classic symptom of having installed windows in IDE mode, and then attempting to boot in AHCI mode.

SIW2: if that's the case what do I need to do?

I know when I built the system and installed windows 7. The bios sata config settings were set to AHCI.
and it worked. Everything worked. I am not 100% sure if I installed windows via ACHI but I assume that It was installed via IDE. However, it worked and I didn't monkey with it.

Right now I have changed settings in the bio's to use IDE instead but by doing that nothing changed. I will give that a try. Right now it' s 9:21pm here and soon gotta go to bed and go to work tomorrow. I think I will be able to try stuff on wed and that's the only time I will have until a weeks or so.

No, it doesn't boot up ok. However, it boots into command line but it's supposed to boot into a desktop. However, with linux I at least get a command line.
