Buying a new motherboard and installing it is very risky if you don't want to reinstall Windows, even if it's the exact same model.
Many have had the same issues as you could expect when installing a different motherboard, which is why it's recommended to reinstall Windows even when replacing the motherboard with the same model.

Well seeing my current mobo apparently has one foot in the grave already, what do I have to lose? Do you think it'd corrupt my files?

Anyway, since it'll take a while for the new mobo to even arrive, I'm keeping the new ram sticks installed for now in case those really were the problem. I didn't get a BSOD on boot after installing them, but if the caps have trouble building charge but not keeping it, it'd explain why I don't face any issues while the PC is powered up since it takes a while for them to lose that charge still.

I mean I guess I could always solder in new caps but that's a bit of hardware modification I'm not gonna try my luck with.

Update: replaced the ailing G41M-GS3 with a G41C-GS R2.0 and it went so smoothly it's suspicious. I got no errors and Windows didn't even deactivate.
