I only took the hdd to him, thinking that's what the problem is. So, how do you check the memory and mb?

Do you hear any beeps during the bootup?

You say you have a custom build. Did you do that yourself?
How many sticks of RAM do you have? Are they in the correct slots per the mobo manual?
Would you mind stating your system specs in more detail?

It's possible the power supply is going bad or the CMOS battery is near dead.

I changed the cmos battery. It beeps once on startup. It's a put together machine. All I can say is that it's got a gigabyte mb and nvidia 610 video card. 2 sticks of ram. The power supply seems ok as all the fans are working

One beep is good. Two would be a memory problem.

I don't know what the person did to check your hard drive. It would have best if he could have tried to boot from it. I mean, it's easy to check if it will spin up but from what you're describing there's an issue with it, maybe a problem with the MBR.

I didn't see another previous response. The computer shop guy said he didn't check the operating system on the hdd. I thought it was strange too. He just said the hdd was ok. Anyway, I have 2 ram sticks and I pulled each one out and booted up but same problem, it kept crashing. I managed to keep it in safe mode about 15 minutes before it crashed. I copied memtest from usb to C drive but it just wanted to test the usb even though I removed it from the computer. So i gave up on memtest. I think now to copy all files from faulty hdd to me external hdd. Trouble is faulty drive is ide so I'll need some sort of cables then i can format faulty drive and reinstall win 7 to see if that fixes it

Did you select RAM when you got to the memtest configure settings?

Since you removed the RAM and it still does it, it looks like something else.

There was too much information on memtest for me to understand before it crashed. It defaulted to the usb drive even though I removed it from the computer. I think now to take the hdd along with my 1tb external drive and get him to transfer all the files then I'll format the faulty one

Hello. Here's an update. I bought a 500gb hdd off the computer shop guy, started a clean install of Windows 7. It seemed to go ok then it froze on loading windows files at 41%, the mouse cursor froze. I hit the reset button and it went to the black boot screen. At the bottom it said bootmgr is missing press ctrl alt del to restart which i did but it kept going around in a circle to the black boot screen. Press ctrl alt del to restart. I had no choice then but to turn it off
