Ideally, you need to be able to open a cmd prompt, then we can run processes from there!

I was mistaken there are four partitions

(G) Local Disk
(H) Recovery
(I) System
(J) HP_Tools

I now have "Command Prompt" open as Administrator

I don't suppose that you can post a screenshot of the disk management screen can you?
In the elevated cmd prompt type diskmgmt.msc and press Enter.

Unfortuanely, the screenshot is unreadable. This will be due to the fact that only the basic drivers are loaded.

In the elevated cmd prompt type chkdsk C: /R and press Enter [Reboot needed].

I typed in the line and the reply was the following
>
The type of file system is NTFS.
Cannot lock current drive.

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts ? <Y/N>

Would I be right in thinking that if I close disk management and try again I might get a better result ?

UPDATE
I closed disk management and got the same result

That is what it is supposed to do, please type Y and press Enter to Reboot.
