The times I have had to reinstall Windows were when I got that message ("Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: ...").

If you could hook up another drive with an operating system on it, you might be able to access the files on the drive that won't boot. Me, I would hook up any old drive I had laying around and install Linux. Linux can access Windows drives, copy files, etc. And it's easy and fast install Linux. however, if you have no experience with Linux, you may not want to go that route, which is understandable. In that case, hopefully someone here will hit on the solution. SIW2 said something about a corrupt fvevol.sys. I would explore that possibility. Maybe do some research on it, which is what I would have to do as this is something down a bit lower in the weeds that I am familiar with.

you could try replacing fvevol.sys in windows\system32\drivers with a fresh copy and in winsxs. But you should make sure it is the right version

I am closing this one and will start another. Everyone seems to be misunderstanding my perfect English and providing responses that have naught to do with the issue.

I have been very ill while working on the PC. It has my email accounts with AT&T, which cannot be accessed any other way. I cannot just reinstall Windows 7 as it will wipe Outlook with the important email accounts. I have been sick for over two weeks, but working on the PC through it. I appreciate the original responses, but the latest ones are useless. AT&T has placed repulsive restrictions on the accounts, so the only means of accessing them is through Outlook on the original Windows 7 disc.

I am so sorry that I wasted your time and you wasted mine by not reading and comprehending the issues before responding.

Well, we have all been there. That's why this forum exists, to help people when they run into problems. I disagree however that any of the responses have been irrelevant. Maybe it seems that way to you, but everyone who responded simply was trying to help you. Trying to help someone in need is never a waste of time. It's a process of communication and feedback. I'm pretty sure your problem can be solved. It's just a matter of further clarification of exactly what it is. And your agreeing to try some of our suggestions.

just a quick clarification: I mentioned Linux awhile back. You don't even have to install it. most Linux distros allow "live mode," which means you can just download them to a USB stick, or even a CD, if it's a light enough distro. You would then be able explore the drive and possibly recover data from it.

The way I see it, your problem breaks down into two parts:
    1) Getting the drive to boot

    2) If the drive won't boot, recovering data from it.

some of the suggestions have dealt with the first option, others with the second. but they are all relevant, just to different options.

    Take care and good luck!
