Windows 7: Windows 7 Freezing

Windows 7 Freezing

I recently did a clean install of windows 7 ultimate on my machine (and by clean i booted into gparted live and deleted my partitions, then made a whole drive ntfs partition). From there I installed windows 7 without a hitch. But after leaving the computer idle for a little bit of time, I will come back (turn my monitor back on) and see a pure black screen. I'll wiggle the mouse, but nothing, the monitor even says no signal. It has only froze when i havent been actively using it (and im not quite sure the time period needed to freeze, its gone from a few minutes of inactivty to up to multiple hours (overnight)). I'm not sure why this is happening, because i ran the RC 7100 without a problem. Ive downloaded the updates from windows and drivers. My sysetm specs follow:

intel core 2 duo 2.53 ghz
2GB ram
ati radeon 2400 pro
32 bit
(more info can be posted if needed)

I've also reinstalled windows 7 (cleanly) twice, and to no avail. Ive disabled power options of turning of hard disks, and display, and sleep, but it still freezes, with no response or video.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks - Posermobile89

Windows 7 Ultimate

It worsened today...

When I woke up, as expected, my computer was lock-ed, requiring a hard turn off (via power button holding). But then, once it got past the starting windows screen, i got no video. To fix this, I had to reinstall again...

Any solutions would be greatly appreciated (if not, I may have to revert to xp or vista :\)

This almost sounds like a heat issue... what are your temps running??

Windows 7 Ultimate

According to everest ultimate trial, my temps are as follows (in Celsius):
Mobo: 36
cpu 1: 41
cpu 2: 39
Aux: 85
GPU Diode: 53

While it could be a heat problem (ill investigate by cleaning out my comp, the air vents are a tad dusty), I dont see why a heat problem would be fixed by another clean install of Windows. Ill post to see if this install work (before I install everything like I have before) and when i cleaned out my air vents.

Thanks for the idea

just cleaned out my comp, it was fairly dusty. I will post updated temps once the comp warms up to normal usage

new temps are as follows:
MOBO: 33
CPU 1: 41
CPU 2: 31
AUX: 84
GPU: 44

2 things to try:

Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.

Task Manager
Also, you can monitor the system for excessive resource consumption. To do this, open up Task Manager by right clicking on the Task Bar.
Then select the Processes tab.
Then select the "Show processes from all users" button (in the lower left)
Then select the View menu item, then select "Select columns"
In the Select columns window, place checkmarks next to I/O Reads and I/O Other.
Click OK to accept the changes.
Resize the Task Manager window so you can see the most of the columns.
Wait for the system to freeze.
Look at all of the columns to see if there's anything that looks excessively high - if so, let us know the Image name of the process.
FWIW - System Idle Process is supposed to have high CPU readings - anything else with high CPU readings is an issue.

Windows 7 Ultimate

Alright, thanks. I'm posting the msinfo32, but for what ever reason, it hasnt frozen yet. I left it on all night (excess of 12 hours) and came back and its working fine. So I don't know if the cleaning fixed it, or this install was a miracle, or it was a program I installed every other time, but didnt this time. Im wondering if its some sort of program conflict, because this time, I only installed the minimum, and havent gone full blown installing everything i had before, or transferring all my media over.

Also, my temperatures are consistent with my second post, after cleaning it out, so my computer is definately running cooler :)

No significant stuff in the MSINFO32 file. If Windows Error Reporting has been turned on the entire time, then the most likely explanation is a hardware error.

If it's "fixed", then it could be the result of the cleaning that you did. Otherwise, I'd suggest waiting for further problems and checking the Windows Error Reporting feature for details.

Alright. So far its been good, i think soon I'm going to start transferring all of my media back over, and installing all of my programs again, and see if a problem arises, if not, ill blame the dust.

Thanks for your help all
