    Windows Explorer Stops ?

    Hello,

New PC and new user of W7.

This is really annoying, and I was wondering if anyone had any idea as to what might be the cause, and hopefully as to what might be the cure.

Windows Explorer comes up with a message about every 20 to 30 minutes to the effect that it is not operating anymore, and that it will fix itself
(not exact wording, which I don't remember, but the gist of the msg.)

It then, apparently does so, at least for the next 1/2 hour.

What is going on, please ?
Some conflict, perhaps ? With what ?

    Cure for ?

    Thanks,
    Bob

    Hi bob and welcome

We could use some info about your computer

In the mean time there is one place where we can get a log of what is happening. There is a lot of data so you want to wait untill the next time it happens. when it does typu eventvwr in search. go to the windows log>application tab. You need to look for errors (they have a red 'x' in the left hand column) that have app hang, app crash, or IE in their name. when you find them use the built in snipping tool (type snipping in search). Upload the snip using the attachment icon(shaed like a paperclip)

    See pics

Let us know if you need help

    To ZigZag From OP

    Hi,

Thanks so much for help; really nice of you and much appreciated.

Am in my 70's now, not all that sharp with this stuff, so please put up with me a bit.

Went to the Event Viewer like you suggested.
    Wow. Tons of stuff.
No red X's to left of messages anywhere.
Lots of items, all with an info. icon to get more on.

Wanted to copy and perhaps send you the file off-line, but couldn't figure out how to.
However, seems like most of the messages are related to ATI.
Guess this is my Graphic Card ?
Could this be causing all the Windows Explorer shutdowns ?
Incorrect Driver, or a not up to date one, perhaps ?

Will try and do more of what you suggested, but here's a pretty representative message.
I am doing this this AM, and so far have not had any problems.
So this snipit is from yesterday. (see at bottom of this msg.)

    Thoughts ?

BTW: where is this snipit tool you mention ?
How do I display it ?

    Best regards, and thanks again.
    Bob

So event viewer has nothing that looks like the enclosed snip? I have not seen a log that didnt have a few.

Snipping tool. type snipping tool in search
To upload it you need to attach it to the paperclip shaped icon in the reply form.

See snips in my below post

Which antivirus are you running, if any?

Uninstall all ATI stuff from the computer in the normal method. Then, use Driver Sweeper from http://www.guru3d.com to clean ATI stuff too.

    http://downloads.guru3d.com/Guru3D--...load-1655.html

After, install the latest driver for you card from ATI's website.

Windows Explorer Quitting & New Drivers ?

    Hello,

As I've posted before, Windows Explorer quits on me about every 1/2 hour or so.
Then it "fixes-itself," and restarts and runs for another 1/2 hor.

Using W7 on a few weeks old HP Pavillion Elite Desktop.

If I look in Event Viewer, I find zillions of "events," most of which list ATI in their description of what happened. I am assuming that most of these related to my Windows Explorer problem. But, perhaps not ?

Thought maybe it's a ATI Driver problem ? Likely ?

So, looked in Device Manager and find I am running vers. 8.620 for my ATI Graphics Card.

I then selected do the internet search thing for any new drivers, and it came back to me that what it is currently using for my graphics card is the latest.

If I go the the ATI site, though for Windows7 and a 64 bit OS & Drivers, I find that apparently there is a later Driver version 9.11 available that came out in Nov.

How come this disparity, and the not finding it by the automatic search ?

Frankly, the ATI download site is confusing to me, and I am a bit apprehensive about doing the download and install of this new "stuff".

It seems to be other items as well as the new Driver.

So, should I download and install it ? All of it ?
Any danger in doing so ?

BTW: My graphics card is an ATI Radeon HD 4650

    Thanks,
    Bob

yes download the new drivers, i had a similar problem.... my screen would randomly go blank and disable aero, i ran a windows update check for drivers it camer back with nothing, turns out it was checking for updates to the "generic" ones, downloaded them from the Nvidia website, problem solved,

might be worth doing a check for chipset drivers too, you dont mention whether its an integrated graphics card... if it is the chipset might be causing problems (again this was my issue, i think, i updated all at once)

it certainly cant do any harm... and if it does thats what "system restore" is there for

Device manager doesn't always find the latest drivers, it is best to get the latest drivers from the manufacturers website. Also, I would also download the suite so you could change your settings.

And especially, never get video drivers from Microsoft. Always from ATI.
