    64 bit - Blue screens

    Hi all,

I'm a newbie to this forum and to Windows 7. I've recently installed W7 64 bit to a PC I've just built. At first I thought all was well but I'm getting the occassional blue screen error. There is no pattern to the errors.

I've tried a number of fixes - replaced generic graphics driver with most recent ATi catalyst. I read in this forum that the Asus tools may cause problems - I've removed these too. I'm still getting the blue screens. Hopefully my system specs can be pulled from my profile. The only other info that may be relevant is that I'm running Norton Internet Security 2010. I've attached a mini dump file (zipped) from the latest blue screen.

    Hopefully someone can help.

    Thanks in advance.

Hello and welcome to here, this place.

Please completely uninstall Norton to test. Let us know how it goes after.

In addition, these drivers should be updated to latest:

    Code:
    RtNdPt60 RtNdPt60.sys Mon Dec 10 21:49:52 2007
    Rt64win7 Rt64win7.sys Fri May 22 10:52:30 2009
    RtNdPt60 RtNdPt60.sys Mon Dec 10 21:49:52 2007
    The dump:

    Code:
    IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (a)
An attempt was made to access a pageable (or completely invalid) address at an
interrupt request level (IRQL) that is too high. This is usually
caused by drivers using improper addresses.
If a kernel debugger is available get the stack backtrace.
    Arguments:
    Arg1: ffffe481122e1dae, memory referenced
    Arg2: 0000000000000002, IRQL
    Arg3: 0000000000000000, bitfield :
        bit 0 : value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation
bit 3 : value 0 = not an execute operation, 1 = execute operation (only on chips which support this level of status)
Arg4: fffff80002b70c76, address which referenced memory

    Debugging Details:
    ------------------

READ_ADDRESS: GetPointerFromAddress: unable to read from fffff80002cc10e0

    Guys,

    Thanks for the rapid response.

Geo64 - please excuse a stupid question but what drivers do I need to update?

My plan would be to update the drivers first - test - then uninstall Norton if its still blue screening.

As a general question, would installing a clean 32 bit version of W7 be more stable?

Not really more stable with 32bit unless your having a problem finding working 64 bit drivers of course, maybe Norton is having more problems with 64 bit it's hard to say what the problem is but it's widespread.

Between Uninstalling Norton and updating drivers you should be good. Norton should have an updated version before too long that should fix it. http://support.asus.com/

    Hi and welcome

1-the drivers listed at least. google them and you will find who, and what they are
2-sounds like a plan but Im not a fan of Norton.
3-Yes and thats why MS and most of us recommend it

Let us know if you need help

Ok - I've made a decision to do a clean install of Windows 7 32 bit as I'm hoping this will be more stable and less hassle from an up to date drivers point of view.

Before I do so I was hoping someone could clarify if its OK to have 4GB RAM installed with 32 bit. I know there is some debate about how much W7 32 can actually use, but my concern is one of stability.

    Thanks

Having 4GB installed won't hurt anything and should be stable, you just won't be able to use it all with the 32 bit system.

It will be fine, the usable memory discussion has no impact on stability...
