Win7 HP 64b crashes during IE8 usage

Dear people,

Unfortunately tips regarding similar crashes I havenít been able to solve my problem.
Thatís why I am now posting my own issue:

When using IE8 my recent Win7 Home Premium 64b computer crashes repeatedly: completely blocks with a black screen.

I have a new CoreI7 6Gb system with a clean install from DVD upgrade media. I installed IE8 both 32bit and 64bit version.

I have been able to narrow down the crashes of my computer to the moments that I am using IE8 (both the 32b and 64bit version). It crashes at random sites. Only my employers Outlook Web Access site doesn't lead to a crash.

Other:
- I don't have this problem using Firefox (also together with Flash)
- Most recent (64bits) drivers installed
- Not influenced by energy saving settings
- Computer is otherwise stable (running e.g. 48 hours at a stretch)
- Crashes with and without MS Anti virus tools.
- I tried to remove IE8, and download a fresh new version of IE8, but the Microsoft website doesn't provide a dedicated Win7 version of IE8!

When repowering the system, the computer -in the log- reports only that the system had been shutdown unexpectedly: thus also no minidump.

I hope that anyone has a tip for me, otherwise its exit IE8 for me.

Thanks in advance,
Marc

Thanks for the response.
Unfortunately the MS downloadsite will list all previous versions of Windows
but not Win7.

Note: the real issue is Win7 crashing only during IE8 usage.

Marc his and welcome. there is one thing that can cause IE to freeze and die like that. Its called DEP. DEP, or data execution prevention is used to prevent virus, and others from laucnhing in protected memory space. Default settings are MS apps and services. It is located in contol panel>system control panel>advanced>performance>DEP. You can add IE ro the exceptions list so it will not be affected or can turn off DEP completely link here DEP - Enable or Disable - Vista Forums

Good luck

Hi Jonathan,

I will do the clean IE8 install using the Vista version later today and do some testing and report my findings.

What do you think: install the 32 or 64 bit version?

64 bit. There is no need to use the 32 bit version for anything other than compatibility issues.

Hi Ken J+,

You describe a freeze and die of IE only.
In my case the total system completly halts (black screen, all fans start spinning at max, only a powerdown restores). Also no logging in the logfiles of any other issue than an unexpected shutdown.

Do you think this (DEP) applies? (Yes I will try it out as well).
