    Why do you need to?

Changed to my external hard drive D: then typed in mbam.exe and got a "mbam.exe is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file"

    what does this mean?

Again why are you trying to run it from cmd?

Mbam is not an OS file and probably D;\ is not defined in path. You also may have to run it as admin.

is there another way to run it? like i said before i am not able to log onto windows to run the program the old fashion way. so running it from cmd seems to be the best case? How do i want to run the program to check for viruses on the computer?

When i turn on the computer, i press f8 so that i can select Safe Mode... The computer loads up the files and begins to boot into safe mode... After a couple of seconds, i get a black screen with only the mouse cursor. i am able to move the cursor around.

Running MBam from a command prompt....

    regsvr32 mbamext.dll
    regsvr32 ssubtmr6.dll
    regsvr32 vbalsgrid6.ocx
    regsvr32 zlib.dll

From there save mbam-setup.exe to a flash, usb, jump drive or CD. Now transfer it to the infected machine, then install and run the program.
If you cannot transfer to or install on the infected machine, try running the setup (installation) file directly from the flash drive or CD by double-clicking on mbam-

    setup.exe
so it will install on the hard drive.
