    Premature process startup

I installed windows 7 pro 64 on my laptop and desktop. But the laptop will not check disk or defragment the system files/pagefiles. There must be something starting up that prevents this. Disk check just freezes at the countdown 1. The defragment at bootup says the disk is being used by another process. My desktop with the same files has zero trouble doing all this. I can only assume the sony vaio laptop program/drivers that I installed from there website (40 of them) may be the culprit?? Being I have two fresh installs right next to each other sort of helps zero in on this. Anyway to see what could be starting up BEFORE the defragment/chkdisk gets a chance to start?? Thanks for any help in advance. regards Rick

    Hello, Welcome!

Have you installed any programs since doing the clean install? Try removing all programs, or doing a clean install, and immediately try to run Defragment.

If the above does not work, you have a more serious problem. We will try to get it resolved for you.

Will they run in Safe Mode? To try this, rapidly tap the F8 key just before the Windows Splash Screen shows up.

Thanks for your replies! It took me 16 hours to load programs and all the settings to this laptop. Hate to cause hours and hours of work. I tried the safe mode. But it will not try to diskchec or defragment the system/pagefiles. Only when starting windows normaly. Right now the screen just sits frozen "to skip disk checking, press any key within 1 second(s)." The HDD light is consistent blinking every one second.
