Repeated catastrophic failures: reg corruptions etc

Hi, I recently upgraded to windows 7 installing it with a fresh install and I keep facing problems. The PC will run fine for the first couple of power ons after the install, it will then begin hanging for ages at a time whilst indicating huge hard drive activity. The PC will then simply stop being able to boot into windows at all generally identifyting registry corruption as the problem. I have checked the hard disk I am using for windows for problems but none have been founnd. I would really appreciate any suggestions as to what is causing this, I'm getting sick of the constant reinstalls.
