blitz doing an upgrade is the worst thing to do there are always issues afterward the best thing to do is to be able to format your hard drive and do a clean install then things should run smoothly

I've fixed this type of problem with just about every version of windows. They are on the right track above in suggestions. Here are the things to look for. 1, type of ram (any mismatched? and how many sticks) 2. how many ram banks are on the mobo. I need to know how many banks and how many are full. Even though ram may work as intended for say... XP I noticed that if a motherboard has an issue with ram thats minor you will only see it with Vista and Win 7.

If you have say 4 banks and 2 full then you need to know if the sticks are dual channel. Some mobos the ram will not function correctly if the sticks are not in the correct banks (a lot of mobo's alternate banks eg. banks 1 & 3, 2 & 4 or 1&2/3&4)

Try removing a stick and running the machine to test for freezing and time till freeze. Which you are having nearly the same problem I did when I moved from XP to Vista (xp worked fine, vista was random freezing and bsod's). the moment I installed better ram the machine ran flawlessly.

Believe it or not some mobo's are very picky about the ram installed.

Next, what chipset is on the board? Use CpuZ (cpuid.com) to identify then search for a more updated driver from somewhere OTHER than the manufacturer (if you have a branded machine like dell, gateway etc..). Most manu's do not release updates often.

I would safely say it's your ram though. If your tight on money pick a name brand thats on sale. <3 newegg preferably a set that comes with heat spreaders. To rule out heat as the issue with your proc just make sure you clean the fan out. Do not clean with anything other than air. Using tools to do it may suck a strand of dust/lint into the fan bearings/brushes the first time you turn it on and cause your cpu fan to stop working (spurratic movement like its getting stuck is most common).

natekolvek very sound advice but I don't think it applies in this case i think he's suffering from corruption and or improper drivers
