Laptop wakes from sleep automatically

Alright,

I bought my hp dv4-1300 last spring. When Windows 7 came out I got my free MSDNAA copy from my engineering department, and did a clean install (7 Pro, 64-bit). After install, I went to Hp's website and got all the 64-bit drivers for my laptop (gfx, sound, buttons @ top, etc). All of them were digitally signed and installed correctly. I began to notice my battery being dead or near dead when using my laptop on campus. One time I removed it from my bag to find it ON, extremely hot, and the battery almost dead.

This has been going on for some time, and I've done alot to try to fix it.

First, I suspected some device ( like wake on LAN ) was waking the computer. I found the command line commands to see which devices are allowed to wake the computer during sleep, and this revealed no culprit.

Second, I tried looking at the Windows Event Logs. Im not too familiar with these logs but I will describe them best I can here. The event "Power Troubleshooter" is listed and has this as the description. [Note I put the computer to sleep by closing the lid (it does the same thing if i manually click sleep) at 5:23pm. At exactly 6:23pm, this is the event listed.

There are a few events that occour just before this event is listed.
This is the part I dont understand so much.

They all occour at 23:23:50, but are listed before the Power-Troubleshooter event above, as while that event says the wake time is 23:23:48, the event didnt post in the log until 23:23:51. These are the events occouring at 23:23:50, with the more "dated" entries first.

EVENT 08333, BROWSER

I have looked in so many places for information on this issue, and have found nothing. I cannot say if the installation of the HP drivers are causing this issue, because I installed them right after installation.

My current workaround is to set the laptop sleep time to 2 minutes. This way the laptop goes back to sleep almost immediatly after it wakes. After doing this one night I put my laptop to sleep and checked the logs in the morning. Like clockwork, it went to sleep at say 9pm, then woke up at 10pm, then went to sleep at 10:02, woke up at 11:02, slept at 11:04, woke at 12:04, etc.... All night.

It still worries me because I move around alot with my laptop in my backpack, I'm worried about the harddrive mostly, as it could crash when its being jostled around in my bag while running. I wouldnt mind reinstalling but it would be a big hassle, and im afraid it wouldnt solve the problem. This was not an issue on Vista x64, which came pre-installed on my laptop. And sleep is very responcive on windows 7, it takes all of 3 seconds to type my password and im good to continue working. Its not a feature I would like to give up.

If anyone has any input or suggestions for my problem it would be much appreciated. I am willing to try anything really.

I have the exact same problem and would be very interested in a solution...

Someone on another forum hinted on a bad battery for keeping the clock's time, but I have a brand new laptop so I doubt that this is the problem...

As an update, my hard drive crashed a few weeks ago because of this. I will be reinstalling Windows 7 on a new drive and will update if the problem magically goes away on the next install.

After confirming that my clock battery was OK (I turned the computer off for a few hours and when I turned it on, I went to the BIOS setup and found the current time to be OK, so the clock isn't the issue)... I was getting more and more convinced that the problem was the master browser thing...

I tried to turn off the wake up on network, and network boot from the BIOS, but the problem was still occuring... And then I read this: Description of Master Browser in the Microsoft Network | File Sharing | Smallvoid.com, and this other page from the same site explained how to fix this by making a change in the registry that will prevent the laptop from sending information to the master browser on regular intervals Configure master browser election in Windows NT | File Sharing | Smallvoid.com...

The solution that seems to work for me was to change the registry value: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \System \CurrentControlSet \Services \Browser \Parameters \MaintainServerList from Auto to No... And then to stop the Computer Browser service.

Since then, when I put my computer to sleep, it still wake up once, 2 hours after entering the sleep state, but only for a few seconds, and I guess it's because it's setup somewhere to switch from sleep to hibernation... When I come back to the laptop many hours later, I find it in hibernation more, and I see in the logs that it woke up exactly 2 hours after I put it to sleep and the last event of that section is the kernal going back to sleep...

I tried this twice. After the first try, I tried to also disable the Computer Browser service, because I saw that it had been turned on after the 2 hours of sleep and I thought it was the one waking up the computer. But even when it is disabled, the computer still wakes up (but the service doesn't get started at least), so I'm guessing there is another setting somewhere that says that the computer should hibernate after two hours of sleep when not connected to a power source...

I'll try the same experiment today with a connected powersource and will post the results here afterward...

I hope this can be helpful to you and others who may be looking for a solution to this weird and annoying problem...

Yep, it works fine now... When pluged in, it doesn't wake up at all anymore... w00t!!!

Note that I also needed to completely uninstall the McAfee suite of products that had been pre-installed on my laptop from the manufacturer... I think I'll drop them a line to let them know...

Found more cases of unwanted wake up... There were some scheduled tasks that were set by some applications to wake up at 3AM or other specific times, and Widnows 7 seems to honor them even if the computer is asleep...

So I needed to modify or disable those schedule tasks...
