interesting, I actually have the same problem. to make things more interesting, I thought it's a problem with my RC installation (it's a year old as I had a beta and I upgraded it to RC) so I installed RTM on my second harddrive, and very soon after, same problem with freezes started occuring on RTM. It's really random, I thought about audio drivers, turned off the integrated audio in the bios, reinstalled them, I even took out my radeon 4870 and booted of the integrated. took out ati sb and graphics drivers, nothing. I was wondering if its my power supply because software metering is giving me very weird power metering in windows, like super low values but bios gives ok. The thing is, If I turn off my pc let's say now, for 5 hours, and turn it on again, I will have freezes for like the rest of the day. Right now my system is 2days and 22 hours up and it's stable nothing is freezing. so I guess, if it heats up a bit, it's working fine. I browsed event logs, they are full of unexpected reboots, nothing there, reliability monitos, dxdiags, system diagnostics in compmgmt.msc can't find anything.

My MSE is running at 4k right now (3,994kb to be exact).

    That better?

I have been using MSE for months, never had a virus or had it slow my computer.

Ok well my computer just froze after working fine for like an hour, so I'm gonna ditch Avast and give MSE a go.

EDIT: Ok MSE looks good so far, running at about 3000-4000. But what's this MsMPEng.exe, using up 47000k? The description says AntiMalware Service Executable.

my sometimes, when I turn on the pc, freezes when apps load, sometimes I can boot up but it will freeze like 10 min later, when I listen to music, or like fire up a couple of firefox tabs where one is with a youtube video. sounds will sometimes mutate weirdly and it freezes. when I rip a dvd, same story, freezes. but that's only after a fresh start. I can fight with the freezes for a day, and then, it just stabilizes somehow and doesn't freeze. it's a repeatable pattern in mine. had it going for 4 days straight without freezes, than I thought my problem is over. I shutdown the system and went away for a whole day, came back at night, power up the system, kept on freezing, booted up, left it going for the night, and the system was ok in the morning. and is till now. but I'm kinda afraid to reboot now anyway:d

    sanghai, what is your hardware?

well, the thing is, it started exactly like yours. I couldn't get to desktop, it would freeze in the middle of loading programs. everytime. I booted into safe mode, I kinda didn't know what was the problem in the first place so I didnt do anything there, went back to windows, freeze again. then I wanted to go back to safe mode, safe mode didn't boot, freezed on data loading. then I couldn't get to desktop, had a black screen. I unplugged the system from power, waited ten seconds. my bios rebooted as well, had to hit f1 and save the settings again.

after that I learned to unplug the system when that happens. but it went away after a while. like for you, you had to shutdown avast. for me, I had a feeling it helped when I uninstalled ati drivers. but it happened later on as well but not as violently.

the only thing that's connecting your hardware and mine, is the brand of the motherboard. I have an asus as well. do you have an atheros networking adapter? and via hd audio on there?

my crashes occur most often when I have via hd audio deck loaded in the tray. but on the other side, they also sometimes occur while downloading. Somehow I think in my case it might be a failing power supply or an IO bridge on the motherboard. hard to say. currently its super stable. I've been around computers for years but this one is a hard one to trace.

    Hello all!

I have not posted here because I have been very happy with my Win7 experience. Until now.

I am having the same experience as sanghai has had. The only difference is that my trail of A/V programs has been different.

I started with AVG free. Should have stayed with that, AVG has always performed well for me. Decide to try this other A/V program that was reccomended in CR magazine. Tried it for a while, didn't like their popup window! I then got MSE. And THAT! is when the freezing started.

Any suggestions? Always nice to know that this place is here for these kind of issues.

Did you remove the old AV completely first? Have you tried removing MSE and reinstalling AVG to see if that fixed it?
