windows 7, BIOS, acer 7720 crash

    Hi,

I have an acer 7720 laptop which I've been running happily for a couple of years with Vista32 preinstalled. Recently I decided to install windows 7 (32) ultimate. I didn't scrub my HD when I did this, my old vista windows folder is still kept as a backup in my drive.

The Windows 7 installation went fine, however now I occasionally get a crash - about once every 7 hours or so and it seems to happen quite randomly (not related to a specific task). Not even a BSOD; the laptop just powers off instantly. Running my windows 7 troubleshooter it suggested updated my BIOS.

My question is this; is this problem likely to be anything to do with BIOS? Afaik the bios has nothing to do with the OS. I can go ahead and reflash my bios to the latest version but I'm reluctant to do this unless I know it's the problem (scared of bricking my laptop).

    Any advice?

    Thanks in advance
    A noob user

You could try the BIOS update. Its unlikely that it will help unless your laptop is shutting down to prevent overheating. However, I would try a clean install of Windows 7. Side note: You shouldn't really worry about bricking your laptop doing a BIOS update. As long as you just let it do its thing and don't interfere until the BIOS update is done.

I backed up my files and did a clean reinstall of windows 7 ultimate on my C drive. Still crashed quite a lot. Went to the acer website and installed the drivers (intel chipset, graphics, audio, etc). Crashes less; about once per day, usually whilst browsing. Haven't tried the Bios update.

    Easylay,

What ever the problem is, it is the same as on my machine.

I tried to talk to Acer but that was as much use as a chocolate teapot!

The last time I looked Acer didn't have a BIOS upgrade which you can install via Windows 7 & I don't know how to do any other way.

    Does anybody?

    Any other thoughts?

think the problem is something to do with my fan not working anymore following a clean install of windows 7 and a bios update to 1.45. the laptop shutsdown at high temps to protect itself. speedfan doesn't seem to adjust the fan speed for me. anyone any ideas?

Probably is this problem caused by the fan. I took my laptop apart and found a lot of dust between the fan and the filter. I removed everything and since then it didn't overheat anymore. Good luck
