    Blue Screen of Death

    Hi

As advised I am attaching 3 dmp files created after a PC crash at the weekend.

To summarise I am using a Packard Bell PC (3 months old) running Windows 7 Home Premium. I have had no problems with it or Win7 until this Sat when there were 3 BSOD in rapid succession. Apart from updrading my copy of Norton, I have made no other changes to hardware/software.

These are the files - please let me know if I need to send any additional info.

I am extremely grateful for the forum taking the time to help me with this.

    Thanks

    George

All 3 dump files blame Rt64win7.sys - a component of your Realtek networking drivers

    Please do the following:
    - download the latest Win7 compatible driver from here: Realtek
    - uninstall the current networking drivers from your system
    - install the freshly downloaded drivers and monitor for further BSOD's

Also, please remove these older drivers that were loaded at the time of the crash. Don't use Windows Update or the Update drivers function of Device Manager.
Please use the following instructions to locate the most currently available drivers to replace the one's that you uninstall OR remove:
    How To Find Drivers:
    - search Google for the name of the driver
    - compare the Google results with what's installed on your system to figure out which device/program it belongs to
    - visit the web site of the manufacturer of the hardware/program to get the latest drivers (DON'T use Windows Update or the Update driver function of Device Manager).
    - if there are difficulties in locating them, post back with questions and someone will try and help you locate the appropriate program.
    - some driver links are on this page: http://www.carrona.org/drvrdown.html

Here's the older drivers. Please pay particular attention to any dated 2007 or earlier:
    Code:
    adfs.SYS Mon Nov 03 11:48:14 2008 - Adobe File System Driver
    PxHlpa64.sys Wed Mar 12 21:58:17 2008 - Sonic CD/DVD driver (used by many different CD/DVD programs)
RimSerial_AMD64.sys Tue Jan 09 11:50:11 2007 - Virtual Serial Port driver for Blackberry
    wacommousefilter.sys Fri Feb 16 13:12:17 2007 - Wacom(tablet) Mouse Filter driver
    wacomvhid.sys Fri Feb 16 12:29:28 2007 - Wacom(tablet) HID filter driver
    WacomVKHid.sys Thu Feb 15 18:10:54 2007 - Wacom(tablet) HID filter driver

    Hi

Thank you for your quick response.

There doesn't appear to be an update for the Realtek network driver I am using - it would appear that the drivers I am using are the latest.

Also, if the Rt64win7.sys is causing the problem, why do I need to uninstall the other drivers on your list.

    Thanks

    George

Good questions! And as I've never addressed these concerns, this is a good place to do it.

First, if the Realtek driver is the latest, then you must remove it from your system and then install a new one. This will remedy any corruptions in the driver file and will, most likely, fix the problem.

Memory dump troubleshooting is an art form - there's just too many components for you to replace to fix the system in a reasonable time (without wiping it). As such, we make educated guesses based on our experiences. The older drivers suggestions are one of those guesses.

The older drivers that I mentioned are one's that were loaded into the same process as the Realtek driver when it failed. The failure is in the Realtek driver - but isn't necessarily the root cause. As a precaution we ask users to update these older files in order to remove any possible incompatibilities.

For example, the adfs.sys driver could have performed an incompatible operation and then exited from the stack (so there's no evidence of it's malfunction). Then that incompatible operation could cause the Realtek driver to crash - leaving us with a crash that wasn't caused by anything. This also points out that the "cause" isn't necessarily the driver that's mentioned.

We find that replacing these older drivers isn't absolutely necessary every single time - but we find that updating them increases system reliability, and eliminates enough return visits that it's worth the time spent replacing them.

Continued BSOD's without having them updated will get a response of "Please update the older drivers as we asked in the previous post" The reason for this is that we are striving to remove all possible reasons for the system to crash - and once we do that we've either fixed the problem, or we find out that it's an OS or hardware problem. That doesn't mean that we stop there - but we do get more insistent as time goes on.

Finally, when it comes to networking, there's at least 7 layers (in the OSI reference model) that the system goes through in order to translate what you see to what goes out on the web. We also find that unexplained networking issues can be attributed to actions by other programs in any of these layers. The most common things to see cause it are either malware or Internet Security applications - so we investigate those after seeing that the usual BSOD troubleshooting isn't working.

I could go on for hours with this, but...in the end it's your system and you can what you want with it. We're just here to make suggestions.

Thank you for that it has made things much clearer. I have managed to update the Wacom and Blackberry (RimSerial_AMD64.sys) drivers but I'm not sure how to find updates for the adfs.sys and PxHlpa64.sys.

Also I'm not totally sure how to uninstall the current Realtek drivers. Is this done through the Control Panel by uninstalling the Realtek entry there?

Hope I'm not being a nuisance.

    Many thanks

ADFS.SYS - merely uninstall all Adobe products from your system. Then visit the Adobe website to download the latest versions of their software as needed.
As for PxHlpa64.sys - uninstall all CD/DVD programs until it stops loading (just kidding)

Actually, use this free program to stop PxHlpa64.sys from loading: Autoruns for Windows Then, whichever CD/DVD program(s) won't work will tell you which it is. Here's a list of some of the programs that use it (http://www.carrona.org/pxhelp20.html):
    RecordNow!
    ESSSONIC
    Sonic RecordNow!/Sonic_PrimoSDK
    Dell Media Experience
    Pioneer RecordNow DX
    Sonic MyDVD/RecordNow!/RecordNow DX/MyDVD Plus/PrimoSDK
Microsoft Plus! Digital Media/Digital Image Suite
    Corel Photo Album
    HP RecordNow/DigitalMedia Archive
    IBM RecordNow!
    Roxio Easy Media Creator/RecordNow Copy/Drag-to-Disc/Creator Basic v/Media Manager/CinePlayer
    Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
    Yahoo! Music Jukebox or Roxio
    Napster Burn Engine
    1CLICK DivxToDVD
    OLYMPUS muvee theaterPack
by Sonic Solutions (www.sonic.com) or VERITAS Software, Inc (www.veritas.com).
Uninstall current Realtek drivers by first visiting Control Panel...Programs...Uninstall a program.
If nothing is there, then go to Device Manager and right click on the device to uninstall it. If it asks if you want to delete the driver software - answer Yes.

    Hi John

I've managed to locate the updated drivers for Realtek (I was wrong I didn't have the most recent drivers) and I've uninstalled and reinstalled them.

The ADFS.sys is going to be a major problems as I have both the Adobe CS3 and CS4 suites plus InDesing CS3 and CS4 (and the list goes on). To uninstall that lot then reinstall it all again would be the short root to madness or drink or both.

Is there any other way around this that you know of.

I will, however, look into the PxHlpa64.sys at the weekend. The 3 occurrences of BSOD that I experience last weekend were my first. At the risk of tempting fate, there has been no re-occurence.

So just the Adobe thingy - any suggestions gratefully recieved and thanks for all your help thus far.

    Regards

    George

    Hi dougal1998,
I have been following your post as I am having similar problems with my Realtek drivers on win7 x64. My bugcheck also tells me the probable cause being Rt64win7.sys. You mentioned that you got newer drivers - I am on 7.011.1127.2009 and it says built by WinDDK. Is that the most current driver you found? If not, where did you locate the new driver.

I appreciate your help on this!
    Thanks.

    Hi IndianinIA

Those would appear to be the same drivers that I found and downloaded from the Realtek site. The download info wasn't terribly helpful (to me anyway) and it took a while to ensure I was downloading the correct drivers.

The only drivers I haven't updated yet are ADFS.sys and PxHlpa64.sys.

I haven't had any further BSODs since the initial bout when I posted this some time ago.

Not sure how much help my reply is to you.

    Regards
