W7 Blue Screen debugging help needed

Hi all,

First time poster here so I hope I don't break any protocols!

I've read few threads here about debugging blue screens but after installing the Windows debugging tool and the symbols, I can't seem to get it to work properly so I was hoping someone might be able to take a look at the minidumps if I post them here.

I've zipped them up so if someone would be kind enough to have a squizz I'd be very happy.

The computer belongs to a client of mine so I'm trying to pinpoint the cause of all this blue screening. The system used to run Vista and would blue screen and even after a fresh install of Windows 7 it continues to do so. I'm leaning toward a possible hardware problem because of this but other opinions certainly welcome.

The system is a Compaq Presario SR5360AN with an Athlon 64 x2 5200+ CPU, 3 GB RAM (2x1024 + 2x512).

Below is what was on the last blue screen:

IRQL Not less or equal

0x0000000A (0x63536343, 0x00000002, 0x00000001, 0x82885CFE)

Thanks in advance for assistance!

Hello Welcome to SF,

I guess the lot of issues are going down so we have to narrow down the issue first. Lets start with some basics. First remove your Display and Network card drivers completely from the System and download the drivers from nVidia's website and install them and NOT from Windows update. Update your BIOS with latest firmware. If you have enable Readyboost to any USB or External HDD disable it. Uninstall any third party Antivirus / Firewall if installed and see whether that makes any difference.

Quote:
Run the Memory Diagnostic & HD Diagnostic

Also i would recommend to run System Integrity Checker
Start > Run > CMD >Right Click and Run as administrator > SFC/ SCANNOW

CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT (101)

a) BIOS bug
b) a driver whose activity is causing the target processor to lock up
c) a hardware defect (temperature, voltage, dust, RFI, outright borkedness...)

Then some of the Dump errors are:

Code:
CLOCK_WATCHDOG_TIMEOUT (101)
MEMORY_MANAGEMENT
NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM
BAD_POOL_HEADER
CACHE_MANAGER
SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED
KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED

Drivers to update

Code:
nvm62x32.sys Sat Oct 18 02:30:39 2008
Bad Drivers

Code:
msrpc.sys unavailable (00000000)
Fs_Rec.sys unavailable (00000000)
Null.SYS unavailable (00000000)
vmstorfl.sys unavailable (00000000)
Msfs.SYS unavailable (00000000)
win32k.sys unavailable (00000000)
TSDDD.dll unavailable (00000000)
cdd.dll unavailable (00000000)

*******************************************************************************

SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000007e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
happening.
Arguments:
Arg1: c0000005, The exception code that was not handled
Arg2: 00000000, The address that the exception occurred at
Arg3: 8e990b78, Exception Record Address
Arg4: 8e990750, Context Record Address

Thanks Cap'n!

I'm running memtest now and will leave it for a while to see what happens. I ran a supposed memory test from within Windows (not sure of the usefulness of it) which did throw up some errors saying the memory couldn't be written to.

Will also run Seagate Drive Tools over the HDD. I've disabled the nvidia onboard LAN controller altogether as getting drivers for it was a pain. Have popped a NIC in that I know to be working.

The graphics drivers were the latest so not sure what to do there, I did uninstall them and reinstalled anyway.

Is a list of problems that long normal?? It sure seems like a lot! This is why I tell people not to buy their PCs from departmant stores.

It may be a problem tracking down the BIOS for it seeing as it's not really forthcoming withits model number but I'll persevere and see what turns up. Last thing I want to do is bork the BIOS!

WIll report back with any progress.

Update:
Replaced the NIC, changed the graphics drivers and applied the MS hotfix. Ran stress tests (Prime95, OCCT) for a few days without incident (Prime95 for 14 hours, OCCT for repeated 1 hour tests). I also ran MEMtest for 12 or so hours. With 3 days without a blue screen I was thinking things were looking up but then yesterday and this morning bam! 2 crashes! I wasn't there to witness them so can't say for sure whether they were blue screens or just freezes/unexpected restarts. The times I have seem it blue screen it has not restarted so I suspect maybe unexpected restarts?

Anyway, attached are the 2 most recent minidumps which I hope will shed some light on things.

Having a look at these minidumps and my limited knowledge of these things it would seem the culprit is ntkrnlpa.exe in both instances. What does thing do and can I update it? I'll have a google around but hopefully one of you boffins has a solution.
As an aside which may or may not be of note - there is 3GB of RAM installed which is recognised by the BIOS and Windows however in things like Prime95 etc it appears that only 2GB is being recognised as available.
