ok if you feel like trying it out, Ubuntu is an OS that is free based on Linux I believe. you can burn the iso to a cd or dvd and run it at startup. You can boot into the OS without having to install the software. This might be beneficial in testing to see if it is the OS communicating with the hardware. I don't know though how it will act with your hardware setup.
If you have tried to get all this working and it was a built to order pc, then I would raise hell with Dell as they should have set it up right in the first place or at least tested all of the configurations they offer.
The mobo is Dell XPS 630 A103....took awhile to find that
And I think 4g ram is the top for this system
Up to 4GB1 Corsair® DOMINATOR® Dual-Channel DDR2 SDRAM (800MHz, 2 or 4 DIMMs, overclockable to 1066MHz)
Edit additional POV: If you call dell and they tell you that it is NVidia and to call them instead, tell (Dell) that they installed the nvidia stuff in your comp and its still Dell's responsibility to fix the problem.
Great, my next two steps will be to try the network card, then the old vid card I have kicking around.
If I'm still experiencing freezing after I'm going after dell. I spend a lot of money with them (prior desktops, wife's laptop, kids notbook) so I hope i'll have a little pull.
At this point I'll even pay the difference between a refunded amount and a new (different) machine, xps experience hasn't been very fulfilling.
Thanks Thorsen, apparently I have to share more love before i can give you additional rep but I do appreciate it !
No problem Rob. I hope you get this resolved as you have invested alot of time, effort and money into fixing the computer you bought. I also assume you bought this pre-built so you wouldn't have to build it and run into all of the things you just went through.
I encourage you to stick around. There is alot of great people and info on this forum.
The nice thing about buying from Dell is that they will take the responsibility of the failure of any sub-component of their machines as LONG as you're under their warranty. Compare this with people like myself who are having the same issue, and had their PC's custom built - we have to find the culprit before we can go after them.
I have a SLi capable board (GA-EX58-UD5) and I used to have an eVGA 9800GX2 before it went sideways on me in like 10 months, so now I'm using an BFGTech (due to unlimited warranty) GTX 285 OC on latest nVidia drivers.
I applied a hopeful fix to address a certain type of lock that involves giving the Local Service administrative rights (good ole Window 7 and its rights management issues), and since then I had a lock, but it wasn't the same severity of lock. It was recoverable, however I could not get a dump file out of it to find the issue.
I have a dell for my office, if you go on there website and type in your tag number it should come up with all the drivers you need for your machine. That is if they still do that service.
Ok I do not want to speak to soon but I think I have solved the problem! I have downloaded the realtek ati hdmi driver From here:
Realtek
And I read on some forum I should lower the core voltage, my amd 9500 should be set between 1.15 to 1.42
So I set it to the minimium for now. It was on auto, as I did not want to interfere with the AI overclocking settings in the ami bios.
It has been running for 10 hours with out a freeze guys, lets hope this was my problem..
For settings on Amd cpu look here:

Good luck guys.
Thanks Petdroo, when I re-enable and install my sound devices I'll also make a trip there for those drivers and add them to my troubleshooting list.
Ok well I spoke to soon it did it again, i had to pull the plug and reboot, ah this so anoying.
Petdroo, sorry to hear, I was hoping that your suggestion would fix it....
