Windows reports disc failure
I have a new build running Windows 7 32bit,
Case/ChiefTec Mesh full ATX,
PSU/CoolerMaster Extreme 800w
MB/Gigabyte MA770T-UD3P skt AM3,
CPU/AMD AM3 Phenom II X4 965 - 3.4 Ghz,
Cooler/Corsair H50 watercooler,
Ram/Kingston HyperX 1330 DDR3 - 4Gb,
GPU/Inno 3D NVIDEA GeForce 9600 GT,
Monitor/Samsung SyncMaster P2370 23",
Audio/Creative Sound blaster Audigy 4,
HDDs/2 x Samsung HD103SJ Spinpoint3 1Tb Sata2,
DVD/LiteOn 24X multi Writer Sata2,
Plus Floppy and USB card reader.
OK, the comp starts pretty quickly and runs smoothly and fast, does everything I have asked it to do. But I keep getting the message Windows has detected that both my hard drives are about to fail, they are identical and both of them are brand new, as is the rest of the comp except the sound card. I have run check disc on all partitions with no problems shown, I have run Everest Home Edition and it shows my HDs are 38degC on the OS/boot drive and 30 on the idling drive so no overheating worries. I thought it might be something to do with S.M.A.R.T. but it was not enabled in BIOS. I clicked to stop the message being shown as it is rather annoying but I'm still nervous, I have now enabled S.M.A.R.T. just in case. As many people have reported this failure message on Windows 7, I'm left wondering, is it just some crappy bit of software not working correctly or have we all got real HDD problems.
Another thing is the comp shuts down, say after finishing playing an album or movie with no other activity or after a short time of complete idleness. To reboot I have to power off the PSU, swith it back on and start comp but it doesn't see the Monitor first time so I hit the restart button and it starts up as normal but goes to a Login/Switch User screen, I log in and my desktop is as it was before shutdown, all open folders are still there, open apps still able to run without restarting them. Its probably some sort of power saving device but if it is, I can't find it to turn it off, any ideas?
Thanks for any help on these issues, Keith, Leicester UK
