security app? NIC

Do you mean an AV program? yes I use Bit Defender 2010, is that what you are suggesting?
I am afraid I am not familiar with NIC drivers, how can I tell if they are up to date?

Thank you for your assistance

following what griff said you should try uninstalling Bit Defender completely and install MSE for the purposes of debugging, then to check your NIC drivers simply right click computer\properties then select device manager and look down the list for your Network Adapter, right click that properties and drivers tab then check version and date and compare that with latest from the manufacturers website

AV

MSE is what? Microsoft Explorer?
I uninstall BD 2010 install MSE then check the Network adapter?
It currently says
RealTek PCIe GBE Family Controller
The driver version is 7.12.1218.2009 12/18/2009
I went to their site but couldn't figure out how to find this drivers to see if its the latest version.
Thanks again

your best bet is to download the drivers directly from Realtek , but first you need to identify your network card to use the Realtek website ?

this is mine

Realtek RTL8168C(P)/8111C(P) Family PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet NIC (NDIS 6.20)
taken from device manager ?

use the method i have described above and post back here if you aren't sure how ?

RealTek

This is what I found RealTek PCIe GBE Family Controller. I did not see a date for it, but there was a date for the driver, is that what I am looking for?
Also MSE is an AV program right? Are you saying that my AV program could be causing the problem and I should uninstall it and use MSE?

Thanks again

updates

I went into device manager and under properties it gives you the option to update the driver for RealTek. It did need updating and it downloaded the new driver, there was also an update needed for the display , I think....so I updated it too.
Maybe that will do the trick?

Thanks

another crash

Everything has been going well for the last 48 hours. Today I got a crash when I tried to burn a data dvd in itunes. I did have a 500 gig external drive connected at the time. I have a dump file but do I have to zip it in order for it to be posted here or can I send the file itself? Its only 207 kbs

Windows 7 - Vista

Zip the dump and attach it. A 207kb file it to large to upload - zipping it will compress it to 20-25k.

Copy the dump out to documents, RIGHT-click on it, select "Send to", select "Compressed (zipped) folder". It will crate the zip file w/ same name as dump in your Documents folder.
