Windows 7: Windows 7 freezes

Windows 7 freezes

I am a very frustrated Windows 7 Ultimate user. The reason for my frustration is that Windows 7 continues to freeze. Sometimes 5 minutes after I turn on the computer, sometimes after 45 minutes and sometimes after 62 minutes etc.

There does not seem to be any connection btw. the freeze and what is going on on the computer. It may freeze while I am watching af DVD, but it may also just freeze with no programs open just waiting for me to use the computer.

I have already reinstalled Windows 7, but with no effect. The problem is still there.

Processor: AMD Phenom 9500 Quad-Core, 2.20 GHz
RAM: 3,00 GB
System type: 64-bit
Graphics card: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT

I would really appreciate if someone could help me solve this problem, since Windows 7 actually looks like a very promissing OS.

Best wishes

Is this a brand new system?

I would suggest that you examine the contents of the "event viewer" and see what sort of possible errors might be showing up there. At this point it could be pratically anything to blame from over heating to faulty memory

Windows 8

I have spent lots of time studying the logs in the event viewer. The only even related to the freeze seems to be the Kernel-power related to "restarting the system without a proper closing of the system". Most like this appears because I have to cut power to the computer in order to get going again.

Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit

I had this problem and was NVidia card/driver related. I got an inkling through event viewer and through the Action Center; but nothing specific. Device Manager reported the video card and driver were working fine with no errors. I ended up installing a new card with the latest drivers from NVidia and no more problems. I still do not know what really caused my problem.

Before I replaced the card, I ruled out bad memory and a faulty PSU, both of which can cause these symptoms. Good luck and let us know how you resolve the issue.

Windows 7 x64 Professional

I had the exact same issue. It started when i put in a nvidia gt 240 graphics card. When i would boot up it could freeze first time i tried to open a window or it would let me watch 30 mins of a blue ray and then freeze. I found that if i turned windows aero off it would work fine. I tried multiple drivers (old, current, beta) nothing worked. I upgraded my power supply and still did it. I replaced the nvidia with a Radeon HD 5770 and i haven't had a single problem in weeks. I would see if turning windows aero off and see if that works and if so then its probably the driver like mine was.

Windows 7 Ultimate - 64-bit | Windows 8 Pro - 64-bit

Hello Welcome to SF,

Could you post us the MSINFO32 file

Please go to Start and type in "msinfo32.exe" (without the quotes) and press Enter
Save the report as an .nfo file, then zip up the .nfo file and upload/attach the .zip file with your next post.
If you're having difficulties with the format, please open an elevated (Run as administrator) Command Prompt and type "msinfo32 /nfo C:\Users\Public\Desktop\TEST.NFO\" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then navigate to the C:\Users\Public\Desktop directory to retrieve the TEST.NFO file. If you have difficulties with making this work, please post back.

Good Luck,

Windows 7 Home Premium (7600)

I'm starting to think I may have a CPU power issue, I am also using the AMD Phemon X4 9950.

I found this article which goes on about the nominal core voltage beting of range 1.05 to 1.30. Running cpu-z on my system my core voltage is 1.328V which is out of range. My bios Core Voltage setting is 1.5V, not sure what all that means. Is the CPU being overpowered by the motherboard?

None the less, the article goes on to talk about AMD's Suggested Motherboards looking at the suggestions for my CPU I see I have noty got one of the suggested chipsets. So now do I spend money on a new but outdated AM2+ motherboard or do I just upgrade both CPU and Motherboard but be current?

PS: In the mean time I have disabled Quiet n Cool in the bios. Not sure if it will help but right now I'm trying anything.
