hard drive is a maxtor diamondmax 21 320gb internal. how do I post screen view of computer management
I put all jumpers in the right places and now I have the drive showing up (F: ) 128.00gb healthy active and 179.00gb Unallocated also in disk properties says file system is RAW and suppose to be NTFS
There are no triangles or errors just will not let me access it and when I go to attempt Disc check it does nothing
hmmm Ok the Disk Mangement is in Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer management > Storage > Disk Management
The drive might not be set to active. I don't know how to set that in XP.
It says it is healthy and active
It might have been deleted when install was done. it has not been overwritten though so you can use a recovery tool like Recuva to restore these files. You will still need access first though. We will work on that now.
You can try this Take Ownership to see if you can access: https://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/1911-take-ownership-shortcut.html
Recovery tool:
Recuva: Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download

RAW means that it is unformatted. I don't know though if its safe to format for NTFS or if it will further loose your info - or maybe restore it. There is another program that you can try though, but it is demo/paid, so I don't know what functions it has: Active@ Partition Recovery. Recover Deleted Partition. Undelete NTFS & FAT partitions.
How does this take over work
Take ownership tut puts an option in your right click menu so you can right click on the drive and take ownership. this will set you as the owner and you should be able.......
Crap that thing is for Win7. Ignore the Take Ownership thing. I don't know if it works for XP.
sorry about that. I know more about XP, but have been using win7 for a while now.
