Anyone have time to look at some dump files?

Hey all. I'm trying to narrow down an issue that's plagued me since I got this PC less than a month ago. When playing any 3D games, I'm getting booted to the desktop seemingly randomly with this message appearing in the Event Viewer as the cause: 'nvlddmkm has stopped responding and has successfully recovered'. Sometimes the games come back, most times they crash at this point.

I had thought it was an issue with my Xeno NIC card since earlier dumps pointed to the ndiswan.sys file. I've tried reinstalling the drivers for the NIC but it made no difference. I have since removed all traces of the NIC and its drivers and started using the onboard NIC but the problem persists.

I've been monitoring the temperatures of the CPU and GPU as well while running the games but they all stay within acceptable ranges.

I've tried different diplay driver versions as well but have since used a drive sweeper program in safe mode to clear out all the nvidia files and re-installed the latest 196.21 drivers again with no change.

It was suggested to run a system file check as well which I did and it came up with no errors found.

I have tried removing one of the video cards and running the other solo and then swapping them to see if it's related to one of them but I still get this message.

I've run memtest on all the memory with no issues but the last thing I was going to try was to pull out all the memory and run one stick at a time and see if I can trace it back to that but haven't had a chance to yet.

If testing the physical memory fails to resolve this then I am at a loss. I'm hoping for some insight or suggestions from anyone that may have had experience with this issue as I've reseached it and seen that it's been around for quite some time.

I've attached the latest dump files that were created when the driver stopped responding. I would appreciate anyone able to anaylze these files and maybe point me in a direction as I'm not sure which way to go with this now.

    Thank you!

    Hi and welcome

Well There are two causes for your crashes. The first and most obvious is the directx portion of your video driver. The second somewhat more hidden is your Norton (either NIS, or 360)

I would COMPLETELY remove your video driver and install a fresh copy. You have to remove all traces of the current one including and control panel etc

Then I would uninstall Norton (use their removal tool). If the problem persists run a system file check
(type cmd in search>right click and run as admin>sfc /scannow)

    Let us know the results

Thanks for the response. I'll try removing the drivers and the control panel, etc. and re-installing.

2 of the games I'm testing are online games, so uninstalling the norton internet security sound like a plan, but makes me nervous about playing those games.

If it does turn out to be a problem with Norton, any suggestions about what antivirus to use while gaming online?

    Thank you.

Well, reinstalling the drivers and running the system file check didn't make a difference. The driver still just stops responding out of the blue. I can't figure this out at all. It makes me want to try XP on this machine and see if it still occurs. I just don't know what else to do.

    Hi -

The bugchecks on all 4 -

0x117 = Vieo TDR timeout = display adapter could not reset in time alloted. Probable cause = NVIDIA

As zigzag3143 mentioned, un-install Symantec/ Norton w/ the removal tool

    ftp://ftp.symantec.com/public/englis...moval_Tool.exe

Download removal tool to desktop. Boot into SAFEMODE (NO Networking).

RIGHT-click on RT icon, select "Run as Administrator". Upon completion, re-boot into Normal Windows. Reset Windows Firewall to default settings.

    Install --> http://www.microsoft.com/Security_Essentials/

Update your Realtek Ethernet driver -
    Code:
    Rt64win7.sys Thu Feb 26 04:04:13 2009 (49A65B0D)
    Realtek --> Realtek

Thanks, J.C. I'll give it a shot. I didn't want to uninstall Norton without some kind of backup. Totally forgot about MS Security Essentials.

    You're welcome.

Be sure to refresh that NVIDIA driver as zigzag3143 mentioned.

Please let us know how things go.

Well, I removed NIS 2010, and installed MSE, updated the NIC drivers and reinstalled the Nvidia drivers.

All seemed well for a bit and got my hopes up but then it happened again 3 times within 10 minutes, so I'm still at square one.

I've attached the 3 dump files from when it occurred but I'm sure it's the same thing. Thanks for the suggestions either way, I appreciate it!

    Hi Tim. . .

I just noticed that those dumps are not from the \windows\minidump folder as they are 'watchdog' dumps. Did you get them from \windows\LiveKernelReports\WATCHDOG or other? If you got them via the Action Center, there should have been 1 or 2 other files with each dump. If you have them, please zip & attach.

This may be nothing, but I found the system uptime of the most recent dumps interesting -
    Code:
    System Uptime: 0 days 4:10:27.884
    System Uptime: 0 days 4:08:58.698
    System Uptime: 0 days 4:04:47.138

I went back and obtained info on the prior 4 dumps -
    Code:
    System Uptime: 0 days 4:10:00.637
    System Uptime: 0 days 3:34:08.411
    System Uptime: 0 days 2:27:42.265
    System Uptime: 0 days 4:18:06.693

5/ 7 0x117 Live Kernel Events involving Video occurring at the +4 hour mark. Maybe some app kicks off at a certain time or when system is idle for x period of time.

    Regards. . .

Yes, I got those files from the Watchdog folder but they were the only files present.

There's nothing I can see that's running after a certain amount of time, idle or otherwise.

As for the times, those first 3 you listed are all from the same session, so the error occurred 3 times in that 6 minute span.

I've sent the PC back to the manufacturer per their request so I'll have to see what they come up with. Thank you for all the help and suggestions regardless, I do appreciate it.

Hopefully, I will have a fully working computer back in a few weeks if I'm lucky :).
