    check all your devices and make sure non are ticked to allow windows to shut them down to save power ,i think you are heading in the right direction

    Turns out (crossing my fingers) I had a bad stick of memory 2 days of testing with one stick hasn't produced any interruptions to the OS. Thank You again for all your help and I hope we have solved this problem.

Upgraded from XP to 7 Home Edition on a Dell 400 XPS with 4 gB ram; 500 gB hard drive; and a Diamond HD 6450 gaming card.
