windows 7 freezes

I installed windows 7 32 bit professional on a new hard drive in a Gateway with a Pentium 4 3.0 processor 2GB of Ram. I started having what I thought were mouse problems but it turns out after using 3 different mice it was the system freezing up. At Boot up when the windows start up audio sound executed sometimes it would freeze and make a buzzing noise or the desktop would be distorted and frozen.
I uninstalled some programs like Itunes and Nero 9 and right now as I type this, the system seems stable. What I'm asking is could the problem be with the bios or motherboard drivers? I'm more advanced than most, but not an expert.

no,all devices are fine. I did uninstall my video card (even though there wasn't any problems I knew about)because I read a thread about nvidia card problem, I have a 9500GT and was using 196.21, but if you look at another thread I answered by foolsfortune you can see all the errors I've had since 3/9/2010

I suspect it is not the mobo, or BIOS. I would suspect a mouse driver. Is the mouse PS/2 or USB wired or wireless etc?

first of all Thank You so much to Pebbly, zigzag and Captain Jack (love your diagnostic tool) for any help you may give. I have uploaded a seven forums folder with my errors, I thought I had it beat when the OS worked for almost 2 days without an error, then I re-installed ITunes and started adding to my library when the OS froze, I have a funny feeling it might be a power setting. I have searched the advanced settings and can't find anything putting the machine to freeze. No BSOD's

no sorry to say I'm stuck with what I have and that is a OEM board that is old. Machine is still very fast. there are updates (to Vista) to the chipset, so we will see. Yesterday, I was converting about 50 songs and instead of leaving the desktop to work on its own I stayed there and did some work, while the mouse was active it didn't freeze and when I was done it didn't freeze at all last night and so far today. Am I missing something in the power settings mouse, usb, hard drive etc.
