    OK now I need help...total windows crash

    I had windowas completely crash, to the point of black screen. I havent installed anything new, other than PC tools firewall. It had been running fine all day, and I went to start COD4, and it wouldnt load....app crash.Then I noticed that Avast was turned off. I decided to do a sys restore, and after POST, I get to the login screen, type PW, and thats it. Blackness. SO, I tried WRE...no joy there.But while I'm sitting in blackness, I can hit Ctrl/Alt/Del and get the blue screen for Taskmgr options, but when Taskmgr opens. theres only lilike 5 tasks running_CRSS,DWM,taskmgr,winlogon, and taskhost. And I cant click any other tabs in TMGR either. So I cant even get a mini dump. Any suggestions or possible causes? Not a big emergency...I do have other systems, but this is the NEW rig. I'm wondering if it is hardware based......?

    Boot with Windows 7 DVD or using recovery partition.

    Does the recovery screen w/ options appear?

    Yes, thats what I did ...WRE, it went through the motions, but when it restarted, and I login, nothing.
    I finally got it back I think....sti;; working on it. do I need to debug a minidump, or run SFC...or both??

    Well, I'm still waiting on scans and such. Still no idea what caused it, but I think I know why the repair install didn;t work....both times. PC tools firewall. But after I recovered, it siad an ourtside app tried to disable and modify firewall....?System's clean as far as I can tell.

    Have you tried disabling PC Tools Firewall or any other security suite in your services list first?

    Sometimes they can block any changes happening to the system.

    Actually, that what I meant to say was after disabling it, the repair went fine... as far as I can tell.
    I just want to know WHAT caused it...

    I would remove the PC Tools firewall completely.

    Install MSE --> http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/
