i ran the sfc and the small black screen disappears before i can read it. I re-installed the driver / driver updater(firmware) 3 times, each time using freshly downloaded drivers (just in case idk) just before i saw your reply. The first time i wasnt certain i "ran as admin" the drivers when i started them up, so i repeated the process to be certain, and then i tried running as xp sp2 with the compatabilty troubleshooter but didnt help. also i happened to try playing with reduced resolution once too, but no change. something i did notice though, after you install the 3.00 drivers it asks you to reboot, and when it boots it detects the device and installs drivers (again?)(windows generic?) So, i then went to my device manager and it shows there to be two mice, one as razer gaming device and the other as a deathadder mouse. I thought maybe this could be the source of conflict. razer responded informing me that "we will escalate your case to our tier 3 group." So i will keep you posted on that info as well.

oh, 1 other note, during the blue screen, it mentioned something about checking with the vendor about bios settings. I did a fresh windows install since buying the computer, maybe there is something to that. i know even less about bios than i know about drivers. At least i am seeing the humor in it now. I guess i can return that sledgehammer i bought yesteday... thx Ken

i used "cmd" and was able to run the sfc scan, by turning off the part that makes me have to right click and "run as admin", this seemed to be the only way i could do this. it goes to 55% and says it can't do it. i then tried to come here to tell you this and my internet immediately went out. These two things may not be related, but it might explain why it stopped at 55%. So, i am running it again just in case. i have to go out, so it should be done when i get back, and i will (hopefully) report the results then.

55% and then says "windows resource protection could not perform the requested operation". Also i activated the user account control settings that i had to disable to do the sfc. ( i referred to it previously as " the part that makes me have to right click and run as admin")
