Windows restarting when shutdown.

Im having a problem with my windows restarting when I want it to shut down. I have seen different posts on this happening and have not seen anything that I could implement to fix the problem. I haven’t experienced this problem before so Im not sure really what to do. It just started happening recently (2-3 days ago) and I have had the computer running fine for months. A lot of post say that it is prob a driver issue but I have made sure they are up to date. (as best I could). I find that the system is probably crashing while shutting down, but does not produce a BSOD, even though I made sure to uncheck automatically shutdown in event of failure. If anyone can help me I would really appreciate it.

If it helps the computer acts the same if I put it to sleep. When I put it in sleep mode, the computer shuts down and then turns back on (as if it were going into sleep mode) but it cannot be “woken up” I have to hold the power which turns it off and then turn it back on, when I do this it turns on as though it was in sleep mode (me being logged in and the internet/word windows I was using are open)

I have attached information about my pc using script I found in one of the threads. Please let me know if it helps or if I can give you any more information that could help solve this problem.

Hello Welcome to SF !!

I guess lot of issues are going on. Update your Modem Driver seems like it's an issues are going on with it. Uninstall any third party antivirus ir Firewall installed in your System and see whether that makes any difference. Reboot the System in Selective startup

Run the Memory Diagnostic & HD Diagnostic

Also i would recommend to run System Integrity Checker
Start > Run > CMD >Right Click and Run as administrator > SFC/ SCANNOW

Update the Following Drivers

Note that while updating drivers to the latest version is correct 90% of the time, you should try to think about whether a driver update caused this. For example, NVIDIA recently released a driver that potentially overheated video cards.

Also, you can fill in your System Specs via UserCP, that way you don't have to upload a .zip file with your info.

Update. I uninstalled all apple software, seeing how the apple drivers could have been affecting my computer. I took out the modem that was in my computer (also to see if that was the problem), still produced the same results. I ran SFC/ and everything came back fine and I rebooted in selective startup and I’m still running into the same problem. (with all of the startup programs disabled). I did download the mem test and hard drive test but did not run them yet.

I will let you know what happens.

I ran both the hard drive test and the ram test, both were successful. I don't know what else I'm missing, but this is sure is frustrating!! If you got any more ideas I would really appreciate it. I would like to try everything before I reformat. A lot of the threads that I read said that didnt fix the problem anyway.

This might be something you've already checked, but you don't have it set to restart in start menu properties.

Hello Josh,

I believe that your have Downloaded MemTest86+ and ran upto 6 passes. If not please do so. The Memory Test in Windows 7 is not very effiecent.

thebigjosh5; Do you have a restore point before this issue?
You can try a few things as suggested already, then go into your bios and disable any wake on lan 'features'. Go into your device manager and poke around all devices look for 'Power management' tabs and try disabling allow to wake checks.

The same reboot on shutdown frustration used to frustrate me but I chalked it up to a possible not exatly 7 compatable motherboard even though I have the correct chipset drivers for 7. And the issue is what realy brought me to this forum.
Anyhow If all else fails you can use the solution I settled on found here;

But I would urge you to persue the cause as long as you have the time and the troubleshooting does not cause frustration to the point of no gain.*

*(this includes excessive alcohol abuse, pulling your hair out, loss of sleep, flatulence, etc.)

I resolved the problem, after troubleshooting it down to the motherboard; I fixed the problem by removing the cmos battery. After 15 mins it worked just fine. SHAZAM!!! Thank you guys so much for your help. And maybe this might be able to help someone else that is having the same problem!!
