    Explorer.exe blocked when restarted

    Hi,

I recently installed Windows 7 Ultimate on my friends System and it was properly activated and updated.

I had installed nod 32 anti virus on his system with the trail log in, which was working just good for the first few hours, before he had to remove it and add Avira's trial one.

Now he doesn't know what he did, but something happened and the system crashed there and I had to use team viewer to check what was happening and I realized the explorer got closed. So I went to task manager and manually started it.

Now I thought the problem would be over right here, but it didn't. I asked him to uninstall Avira, and just go antivirus less for a couple of days, before we would buy a different anti virus. And So he did, uninstalling all the anti viruses and just having his default windows firewall. But it turns out the explorer gets shut everytime he restarts the system and that he has to manually restart it via task manager.

What is the problem here? Should I get into the msconfig start up and tweak around a little bit? Or is it some dotnet error?

    Any insight would be helpful.
    Thank you

Here are a couple things to check:

msconfig - Make sure rundll32 starts at startup

       Warning
Do not make registry edits unless you've backed up your registry

    Registry - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon
    Value should be shell="explorer.exe"

Run a system file check - start, run, type SFC / SCANNOW

Peform a repair install using the installation dvd - Repair Install

Download the best free antivirus available, namely, Microsoft Security Essentials http://www.microsoft.com/security_essentials/

    Now disconnect from the internet.
Remove 100% any anti-virus software present on the system.
    Install Microsoft Security Essentials.
    Run a quick scan.
    Reconnect to internet.
    Let MSE update.

    Run a quick scan again.

    Is the problem gone?

    Looking forward to your reply
