Buy a new hard drive, and install Windows to it. Then plug your old hard drive back in and copy your files over.
Okay I will do that.

Do you know what the cause of this fault could be?

THanks

Hard disks are mechanical hardware, which means it can fail at any moment without warning.

Anything can cause mechanical failure, such as shock or jarring, heat, a voltage spike, and defective hardware.

Okay I've purchased a new hard drive and installed Windows onto it.

I then disconnected the cables from one of my DVD drives and connected them to the original hard drive, but it didn't show up on My Computer?

What can I do to connect it back up and copy over my files?

THanks

Is the drive detected in the BIOS?

If it's not too late, you may be able to recover some of your data using DiskDigger.

If the drive is not detected in the BIOS, or by DiskDigger, all I can say is check the power cable.

Did you study the results of the Seatool Diagnostics full CD scan? It should have told you whether it could fix the problems, and exactly what they are. A failing HD's life can often be extended by these repairs.

Make sure HD is connected correctly to see if it registers in BIOS. Try another cable and port, another power cable. If it will show up, you should be able to browse it for files.

I don't think it said it was repairable. I can' remember to be honest.

The hard drive did show up but the partition with Windows installed wouldn't show as anything but 'Local disk' and I couldn't access it. Fortunately, I'd recently created a new partition where everything was backed up, and I could access all of those files.

I've got a new HD now anyway so it's all sorted.

Thanks for your help!

Maybe you only ran the Quick Test and had preliminary results. If so, the full scan may be able to repair the drive.

I have not had a HD yet which the Diagnostics/Repair could not repair and return to full use.
