    crashing on startup

My computer did an update for the internal backup file. When I said yes on reboot, it would not go past the black screen with blinking white line on upper left of screen. I tried everything and it will not reboot. What can I do???

    Welcome to SF, Ginger!

By trying "everything", what do you mean?

I suggest a system restore to get to a point before the troubles began.

the computer will not start. I would absolutely do that if it would actually start. I can't even get it to start when I press f12 on startup. I tried every choice there also.

Does the screen turn on at all? In your BIOS, set the CD drive to be the first to boot. Then insert your Windows DVD and boot up. If you can boot up that disc, try a system restore and startup repair.
