    Dies in it's sleep


    My computer is generally working great, but has this sad habit of dieing in its sleep and powering off.

    I'm never around to see it happen. There's no BSOD as far as I know, but when I power up there's always the "do you want to power up in safe mode" screen - I choose normal and it usually starts up OK.
    .

    I've attached a few minidumps for your amusement.

    It maybe a related issue, or another thing entirely, but sometimes on reboot, my D: drive doesn't show up. The BIOS sees it, but windows doesn't. I reboot again and it's back. It's a SATA drive, just like my C: drive.

    Any help greatly appreciated

    The disk thing is probably significant.

    Try these free, bootable diagnostics first:
    H/W Diagnostics:
    Please start by running these bootable hardware diagnostics:
    Memory Diagnostics (read the details at the link)
    HD Diagnostic (read the details at the link)
    If you have difficulties running the tests, try disconnecting your D: drive and see if that helps.

    Also, please see these KB articles as they relate to Sleep/Hibernation in Windows 7:
    KB 975599 Stop error when you put a computer that is running Windows 7 or Windows Server 2008 R2 to sleep or into hibernation, or when you restart the computer: "0x9F"
    KB 977186 Error message when you try to resume a Windows 7-based or a Windows Server 2008 R2-based computer from hibernation: "Stop 0x0000009F"

    The memory dump files seem to blame disk.sys - a Windows driver that helps to control your hard drive. So the hardware diagnostics are called for. Also, there's a relationship between the drive controllers and hibernation/sleep - so downloading the latest controller driver from the manufacturer's website may help.

    Finally, your Creative XFi drivers are a bit out of date - please install the latest Win7 version from the Creative website. If there aren't any Win7 drivers, please uninstall the software and remove the device from the system.

    It took a while to get back to you on this, but I am able to confirm that the issue was the hard disk. It was dead, but just didn't know it yet. I was able to install a new one, move all my stuff over to it (happy days) and all the oddities that had been plaguing me for months have gone away.
