Well, I've found what seems to be a workable and inconvenient solution. I set it so that the laptop will never go into a sleep or hibernate mode. Under the power settings, I selected that the laptop should shut itself down once it gets into a critical battery state. Also, I set it so that the monitor will turn off but the laptop itself will still keep running, similar to how a desktop would when its hooked up to power. Lastly, I told my wife that when she is not planning to use the laptop anymore or is going to walk away from it while it is only running on battery, that she manually shut it down.

Since Hibernating or Sleeping is the only thing that seems to cause this error, this seemed like the most logical solution given the lack of any others. I too would like to keep the OS as "modern" as possible.

I considered that but it's not a workable solution for me. I have a laptop for the mobility and without sleep, it really kills that given the start up time for certain programs, mainly the virtual machines.
