update to previous freezing problem
I had this problem where Windows 7 would freeze up during loading. I couldnt get into Safe mode, restore failed and windows couldnt fix the problem so wasnt much I could do. Here's the previous post, its not very long. Thanks zigzag for the help.

Since then I tried a full system restore to put the computer back to its factory default settings. This consisted of reformatting the c drive and then reinstalling windows 7 and all programs that came with the puter from a copy Gateway had set aside on the hard drive. Well, this even failed as the computer once again locked up while windows was going thru its setup to be run for the first time after the fresh install. I tried the factory default recover twice from the hard drive copy and then tried to do it from recovery disks I had made when I first bought the puter but same thing happens.
Now, while it gives me the option to get into Safe mode, it wont let me because it says windows needs to finish its install and setup and tells me to restart but when I restart, windows just locks up again so I can never get it to finish its setup.
Could this be a hardware problem ??
I noticed on 2 occasions while Windows was going thru its setup and before it froze, it came to a screen that said " applying settings" and after a few minutes the screen just went blank. The hard drive continued to work but the screen acted like it went to sleep right in the middle of windows setup.
Zig, I was actually able to run that sfc/ scannow command you gave me from a c prompt in it allows you to use in windows recovery but it said since windows had a "repair pending" it couldnt run the scan. It said to let windows finish its install and then rerun scannow but of course I cant get windows to finish its install and setup.
I was just wondering if this sounds more like a hardware problem ??
