    Doesn't crash after restart

With the help of my brother, I built my new system from parts. It seemed to work OK at first, but started having random blue screen crashes on desktop or running browsers (Opera or IE). It seemed to happen mostly when it was idle. Running games worked flawlessly. The crashes came more and more frequently, so I decided to do a full reinstall. The problem came back after a couple days.

The funny thing is, I discovered that if I started the system normally, then shut it down completely again, and then restarted it, it would work fine, no problems at all. Doesn't make any sense to me, but it works. Anyone have any ideas what's going on?

    Hi and welcome.
The problem could be many. Considering you built it withused parts it could be many things.
Is the motherboard and all the hardware compatible with Win7?
Did you check Microsofts compatibility checker program for Win7 before you installed Win7?
After you did a new install did you check and see if all the hardware drivers were compatible with Win7?
I can go on and on guessing.
My solution is to install WinXP and see what happens. If it still crashes it is a hardware issue most probably.
Sorry I couldn't be any more help.
Good luck in trying to find the needle in the hay stack.

Actually, the parts were all new. The motherboard is explicitly Windows 7 ready, and the drivers were all Windows 7 64 bit, where applicable. I downloaded the latest drivers off the net to be sure they were current.

The thing I don't get it why it's stable on the second startup; it should be in exactly the same state as the first time it starts up, shouldn't it? Dosen't that in some way narrow down the possibilities?
