    not starting with more memory

    Hi,
I have 2 G RAM and win 7 ultimate 64 bit works perfectly.
I wanted to put in 2 G more RAM but the computer locks at " Starting Windows "
for a couple of minutes and then blue screen. And restart and the same problem over again. But it works in Failsafe Mode !
There is nothing wrong with the RAM- modules-tested all 4. They work but only in 1 pair.

ASUS M2A- VM HDMI motherboard with 4 memory slots-each capable of 2 G.
    AMD dual 4000+
    2 x 1024 M RAM ( but would like 4 x 1024 ! )
BIOS recognize all 4 memory moduls and says 4 Gig.
    Any ideas ?

Memory is tricky. Many times you have to buy all the memory at the same time and install. That is, you cant mix and match. From what you are saying you have 2 separate pairs, rather that 2 similar pairs.

Do the two new sticks have the same latency settings as the original sticks? If not, you'll have to set latency to the higher latency of the two pairs.

For your board you will need to go into the bios "Advanced" then go to "Jumperfree Configuration" after that set your memory voltage to manufacture specs. It might take a bit more than spec voltage to run stable. I can't find the spec memory voltage for your memory. According to the Asus site you also may need to bump up your North Bridge voltage a bit.

These settings for your board might help.
    JumperFree Configuration

    CPU Configurationl

    +1.2VNBSB = 1.3v
    DDR2 Voltage Control = 1.9v
    CPU Voltage Control = Auto
    CPU Multiplier = Auto
    CPU Frequency = 200
AMD Cool 'n' Quiet = Enabled

    Chipset DRAM Configuration

    Timing Mode = Manual
    Memory Clock Frequency = DDR2 800
    2T Mode = Enabled
    CAS Latency (CL) = 5
    TRCD: 5
    TRP: 5
    TRAS: 15

I can't seem to find the exact memory settings for your memory, maybe you know what they are?

You won't be able to adjust the memory timings on your board according to everything I've read about it.

There are many problems reported on your board at the Asus web site. Quite a few can't seem to get memory stable with more than 2GB.

Update to the latest bios, then apply Chev65's settings.

    "M2A-VM HDMI BIOS 2302
Fix the problem that system may hang on post when use AM2 cpu"

    and

"Fix the problem that "Usable Memory" is unable to be detected completely if using 4G memory and AMD triple CPU. "

Those sound awfully related if you ask me.

    Thanks again !
Well, now I found out a bit more.
It seems related to the graphic card !
With the external Asus ATI Radeon HD 4550 it wont work at all.
With the onboard ATI RAdeon x 1200 it works but not with the proper drivers. It says " device stopped after problem reported " and runs on Windows reserve.
Now I will try the BIOS update !
    Will be back with report...

    Hi Kenn and all !
I tested the modules one by one- they works fine in one pair but not two.
    All four seems all right.
I also ran the Memory tester in win 7 and it said no problems.
But, today i discovered that if I remove my external graphics card- and use the onboard graphics all four memory modules works !
Well, the onboard card cant use the proper drivers- but use the Windows " spares ".
The non working card is Asus ATI radeon hd 4550 and the onboard ATI radeon x1200.

    Hello rbud

Did you get to the bottom of that problem? I hae a very similar problem that i'm trying to fix and seem to be getting no-where. I went down the oposite route to you thinking it was the graphics drivers for a long time before realising that the memory had something to do with it.

    Here's my question

    https://www.sevenforums.com/crashes-d...-start-up.html

If you got to the bottom of it i'd love to know how?!?!?
