hi all!

thanks for all your help the past couple of days! i decided to call in the heavy artillery and asked a computer engineer friend to have a good look at the system to see what went wrong... we went along the same lines as you guys have suggested and at the end of it all, we overlooked a very basic yet highly crucial problem.

it seems like everything has been caused by an overheating of the system. perhaps the ventilation design of the casing or the lousy built in fan that came with the case... anyway, i changed the built in fan and added in 2 more just to be sure. temperature ratings improved vastly however my cpu still heated up till 78deg celsius which led us to conclude (since the cpu fan was running at over 3000rpm) that there is some problem with the thermal paste application or something happened during installation. this would also explain why my cpu is at 45deg celsius during idle mode as well (i thought it was normal because of the incredibly hot ambient temperature here in singapore).

what are your thoughts on this as the problem? do you guys think this is the likely cause of the crashes?

its now too late in the night for anywhere selling thermal paste to be open. i shall have to watch the cpu temp in the meantime and wait till can have the thermal paste reapplied. will update again if it solves the problem but in the meantime do let me know what you think of this conclusion.

hi guys,

i'm just wondering how much of a difference would reapplication of thermal paste make? cos i've not had the time to buy it and as a quick fix, i opened up my casing, turned on my air-con and blasted a standing fan directly at it.

the core temp went down from between 81-85deg to around 71-76 deg (the 4 diff cores each gave a diff temp according to speedfan). however, at the lowered temp of 71 -76 deg, the system still crashed. the optimal temp of the processor according to intel is 72.7 deg. turning on the aircon and full blasting a fan at it brought the temp down by 10deg but didn't help. =/ and considering that in real day application, i wouldn't be opening my computer case, turning on my aircon and blasting a fan at it. so what i'm wondering right now is, would thermal paste make that much of a difference to bring the core temp down to its 60s at full load? that would mean bringing down the temp by almost 20deg (under normal conditions without the aircon and fan). and taking into consideration that right now, there IS thermal paste between the heatsink and processor and i am only SUSPECTING that it is not applied evenly/properly.

any advice on this?

hey guys,

thanks so much for all your help! i've reapplied some thermal paste and its effects are amazing! lol! i'm running Prime95 torture test for the past half hour. speedfan is showing my temp has stabilized at 65 (even thou it has some other temp readings hovering ard 75deg +- 1) the control center utility that came with my mobo shows a stable temp at 68 to 69. i understand that its still a little on the high side but i guess everything seems stable for now. i'm gonna leave the torture test on for another half hour and and see how it goes before i call it a night.
