Windows 7: win7 BSOD

08 Jun 2010   #1

win7 BSOD (not as easy as one thinks)

Hello Prospective Helper,

This is a fresh install of windows 7 on a new HD I just bought. My pervious windows 7 64bit was having the same issues. (after I kicked a surge protector at a lan party and it shut off my pc, my pc has been having BSOD issues) I get them seemly randomly. It got so bad that win7 rarely started without BSODing. I ended up going back to xp 32bit for a while becuase I didnt want to address this issue (thinking that after school I will just do a fresh install and everything will be alright). I just installed this morning and it BSODed when I was updating (thus....this is not software but hardware). The debugger confuses the crap out of me and I was hoping someone else might be able to read this.

(also super confused why the issue only seems to be in win7 64bit and not xp 32bit)

64-bit Windows 8.1 Pro

This one is pretty straight forward... memory corruption ... Download a copy of Memtest86 and burn the ISO to a CD using Iso Recorder. Boot from the CD, and leave it running for at least 5 passes.

thanks for the advice and I really do wish the issue were that simple...or maybe it is. Anyhow after 10 Passes in memtest86+ on one of the 2gb sticks I decided to load windows thinking this stick was fine and it was one of the other 3 sticks. (low and behold BSOD)

(same memory corruption error) The original 2 pass of all the memory said nothing was wrong with memory as well. Before I posted I used win7 mem test as well on all the memory and it said it was fine. I know these tests aren't very thorough so I did not post again until I got a BSOD on the stick I tested for 10passes and memtest86+ thinks it fine.

Is it really the RAM? I am willing to through it all out and just buy some high-end if this is ACTUALLY going to fix my issues. Otherwise, other suggestions are appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

I suspect ASACPI.sys is causing the issue.

I checked out my mobo it doesn't have the drivers usasma is talking about for my board for win7. I did switch back to some old Gskill 1g sticks I found laying around and it has been running stable for 3hrs! Also I was running Win7 for 7months before I kicked the surge protector (everything went bad after that and that is when I started getting BSOD after BSOD)

although thats an interesting issue and I will watch for another BSOD. If I do get one I will investiagte ASACPI.sys more (as far as can see I have to install the correct drivers for a different mobo version...and hope it works lol. I guess my mobo doesn't nativity support win7 correctly, which seems like bs to me.) I will never buy asus again.

if I do get another BSOD will post again, otherwise going to send back my OZC ram.

win7 is getting worse.

(new RAM error) problem is its not a RAM error: quick memtest, 10pass memtest, and win7 memtest all say RAM is good to go.

I tried Jonathan_King idea about Asacpi.sys and nuked the whole driver/reg entries.

Still I get (example attached) BSODs. Any new suggestions? Think I should just send back the mombo...or try installing win7 32bit?

Try testing all the sticks at once. That way, it will pick up compatibility problems between the sticks.

I have tried all 4 sticks and 2 sticks of the same exact type (I have 2 pairs of different brands). I have also changed the auto timing settings in the bios to the once I got directly from the company after I called them. (still BSODS)

I didn't know about that driver verifier I will go try that =)

I have also switched out the power supply, same issue.

I am thinking about trying win7 32bit and just saying bye bye to 3gigs of ram...

**edit** I have mem tested all 4 sticks at once for 2 passes and was g2g

**edit 2: got the logs**
For better or worse I can consistently get a BSOD when I try and update Age of Conan (I get it un-consistently everywhere else but this is a sure fire).

One log has the Verifier turned on, and one log does not. I hope this is useful.
