BSOD - driver power state failure

Hi,

I'm new to this forum but i hope you can help with BSOD issues on my windows 7 Laptop.

I have a HP HDX18 Laptop that is about 8months old. I bought it with Vista home premium and upgraded to windows 7 home premium when it was released. As soon as i upgraded i started having blue screen of death problems (BSOD) problems. The laptop became unusable as it would crash intermittantly. It turned out to be my anti-virus software, Zone Alarm and so i swapped to Kaspersky.

About two months ago the machine started running slowly, locking up and crashing. I wasn't able to complete any tasks, there didn't seem to be any system restore points and it was completely unusable and so i decided i would recover to factory condition (Vista) and start again. I have done this and reloaded Windows 7 update and normal windows software. I also upgraded again to windows 7 ultimate so i would have networking capability as my other computers are XP pro and a Mac and the networking function in Win 7 home premium is worse than useless.

This all completed successfully last week and within a few days i am again having problems. I cannot shutdown my laptop, it will hang (saying 'shutting down') for about five minutes and then BSOD. I have attached the minidumps files using the SF Diagnostic Tool from this forum.

I also cannot use any usb ports, backup and have trouble with some proprietory HP software.

First things first, i need to find out why i cannot shut down so hopefully someone can read these mini dump files and see what the problem might be.

Hi and welcome

Farily straight forward Memory_corruption. To test y our memory I would download a 3rd party app called memtestx886, burn it to cd, and run it for at least 7 passes.

There is the free version which is what we recommend... download the ISO and burn it as an image file, then boot your computer from it... let it run for at least 7 passes... let us know...

I was unable to find the application 'memtestx886' however i found one labelled 'memtest 86+' hopefully this does the same job.

I booted from 'memtest 86+' and left it running over night which ended up being 10 passes. There were 0 errors reported or found according to the log.

So far today i have not had any problems at all. I can shut down and restart without it hanging, all the USB ports work normally and everything seems reasonably 'crisp' and not sluggish.

If this was the solution, can someone explain to me what the memtest application actually does? I was under the impression that it was a diagnostic tool not a repair tool??

The only problem i have at the moment is that i cannot seem to back up to my NAS drive. It always says that 'the creation of a shadow copy timed out' and gives the error code '0x81000101'

Regardless i am happy to be able to use this machine again!

BSOD again!

After my backup did not complete, the back up program 'hung up' so i decided to restart and the shut down process once again hung up for more than five minutes and then BSOD.

I am attaching the mini dump files once again.

Well, that test most likely rules out problems with the memory (MemTest 86+ is a good memory test program also).

7 memory dumps from 8 to 13 June 2010 (6 days).
1 STOP error cited 7 times, with 1 cause blamed (memory corruption).
This is most likely a driver error (based on the type of STOP error and the consistency of the STOP error messages).

hpdskflt.sys is present in the stack text of several of the dump files (5 of 7). I've seen this driver causing BSOD errors several times before - so I suspect this program to be at fault.

It's a part of the HP Mobile Data Protection System Disk Filter

Please do the following:
- Visit the HP support website and download the latest available version of the HP Mobile Data Protection for your model and OS
- Uninstall the current version from your system
- Install the freshly downloaded version and watch for further BSOD's.

I have looked for the HP Mobile Data Protection software but cannot spot it. Could it be that this is the HP 3D Drive Protection?

I am attaching a screenshot to show what HP software i have available to un/install.

I dunno if that's it, but I've found the direct link to what you need to download: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp45501/sp45501.exe (as with any direct link, scan it with your antivirus BEFORE opening).

Try this:
- go to C:\Windows\System32\drivers. Locate hpdskflt.sys and rename it to hpdskflt.BAK
- then install the file that was downloaded above.
- then check to see if it's created a new hpdskflt.sys file in the C:\Windows\System32\drivers directory.
If so, run the system and see if it gives any further BSOD's.

I have been struggling with this but currently to no avail....

If i change the hpdskflt.sys to hpdskflt.bak then re-install the sp45501.exe file (BTW this is the HP 3D Drive Guard), it will ask for a restart to finish the installation. The restart then fails to complete and asks to start 'launch startup repair', this then asks to do a system restore. This is the only path that will restart the system.

Once it has restarted, i cannot shut down again. In fact i cannot shut down anytime i have tried another process such as 'back up', or 'un/install'... starting these processes will mean that a shutdown will result in BSOD.

The only way to get the system to shut down properly is if i boot from the memtest 86+ disk (although this does not always go first time) and then restart again. This seems to reset the hang up error.

If i uninstall the 3D Drive Protection, restart, then change the hpdskflt.sys to .bak and then install 3D Protection (sp45501) it will ask for a restart.
A restart will fail and i will have to do a system restore to carry on.

If i look for hpdskflt.sys in the drivers file before i restart, it does not exist. The only file is the .bak that i changed.

I am attaching the minidump folder again incase there is anything new.

Any more suggestions? Thanks
