Windows 7: Studio XPS 16 BSOD

Studio XPS 16 BSOD


Hoping someone might be able to help me out before I see if I can get the laptop replaced.
I am getting a BSOD generally once a day, everyday, it is always when the system is sitting idle and not when I am working on it. This started approximately 2-3 months ago

System Info:

Dell Studio XPS 16 - purchased 10/09
CPU: Intel Core2Duo P8600
RAM: 4GB - not sure of brand
HD: 500GB ST9500420ASG
VID : ATI Mobility Radeon HD4670
Vista Ultimate 64 (OEM)- original OS
Windows 7 Ultimate 64 (OEM)- upgraded several months later when Win7 was released via free Dell upgrade. System operated perfectly up until 2-3 months ago.

Things tried or had done with no positive results:

1. Updated all drivers
2. Ran chkdsk
3. Ran SFC /scannow
4. Formatted hd and did clean install of Win7 and updated all drivers (06/28).
5. Contacted Dell, who did went thru their A,B,C list.
6. Dell sent out tech (07/14) who replaced motherboard, wireless card and power brick.

System crashed last night and just moments ago after I rebooted it and left it alone for a couple of hours.

Usual causes: Device driver
PCI.sys was blamed in all of the crash dumps, it was a common issue with XP.
U might want to consider a Repair Install

What antivirus are you using? third party antivirus software known for causing BSOD. Please remove them for time being, replaced by Microsoft Security Essential:

BugCheck 9F, {3, fffffa800468c060, fffff80000b9c4d8, fffffa8008b70410}

Probably caused by : pci.sys

The original OS was Vista Ultimate 64 which I did an in place upgrade to Win7 Ultimate 64 with no issues for several months. After I started having BSODs everyday. I tried numerous things to trouble shoot the problem, finally resorting to formatting and doing a complete clean install of Win7 and when that didn't fix it, calling Dell who finally had a tech come out and replace the motherboard and wireless card.

I am presently using Sunbelt Vipre 4.0 Premium. I will try removing it and replacing it as suggested.

Hi ttran,

You were pretty much right on the money. I believe it was the FW component of vipre premium crashing my system instead of the AV though since I had been running their stand-alone AV (without issue) and had upgraded to their AV/FW solution.

I uninstalled it and installed ms essentials, as you suggested, and the BSODs went away. Looks like I will need a different FW solution since I contacted sunbelt tech support and they couldn't find a solutions to the issue.
