Computer Freezes for 1-3 Seconds (Details in post)

Hi. I recently built a new gaming computer. It runs everything smoothly, but there is one glaring problem that I cannot seem to shake. My computer will at unpredictable times halt everything (freeze) for 1-3 seconds and then resume. During this time, all sound seems to be directed to a different audio port. It seemed to start with my audio. I would plug in speakers, and then I would plug in a 3.5mm headset and it would intermittently (and rapidly) detect the headset. Looking at my realtek audio software, the input that the headset was plugged into would rapidly turn on and off. Plugged speakers into that port and it worked with no problems. The headset is not to blame because I used it with no problem on my laptop. I then suspected it was a problem since I was doing dual audio output. I downloaded the newest drivers from the ASUS site for the realtek audio manager. My computer would still do the intermittent freezing.

I have read some suggestions that it may be my memory configuration. I am a programmer and not a hardware specialist, so I am unfamiliar with how a memory configuration works and how to correct this problem. I downloaded a memory qvl update from the ASUS site, and it only seemed to bring up a console window for a split second before fading out. This also did not correct the problem. Please help me. Here are the details on my machine:

    OS: Windows 7 64-bit Professional.
    CPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16819115214
    PSU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16817814019
    RAM: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16820145263
    GPU: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16814150481
    Board: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx...N82E16813131594

Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide. Feel free to ask for any further details.

There are several ways to find what the problem is. The best is to go into event viewer (type eventvwr in search). Go to the windows log>application tab.

You want to look for critical errors (they have red in the left column ).

When you find them you want to look for critical errors that say app hang, app crash, or anything that relates to the problem.

When you find them please note the event ID, and the source codes and tell us what they are.

Let us know if you need help with any of this.

Thanks so much for this. I will leave my event viewer up when running my games and check it after it has gone through a few of those freeze ups and match it with the times so we can identify exactly what it may be. I'm at work right now, but I'll be sure to post on this later. :)

It appears that the freezing was not related to any error that event viewer is able to detect. The only error I was getting was from Bonjour, Event ID Number 100. I uninstalled bonjour and nothing happened (except a nasty message from apple upon the next run of iTunes) to resolve this. I have also updated my BIOS and I am still getting the freezes.

    EDIT:

I can now describe the freeze a little bit better as well. If I'm playing a game (such as WoW) it will be as if the game froze for 1-3 seconds, and all audio was directed to my headset. The game then resumes with all audio being played through my speakers. If I am watching streaming videos, it will appear as if it were on some optical format which can skip, like DVD. So I guess you could say that it freezes for a lesser amount of time when only watching a video.

I actually have the same exact problem, it occurs while playing games as well. Looking at the event log, I have the same 3 repeating messages every time it occurs:

A request to disable the Desktop Window Manager was made by process (1224)
    At: 10:01:46AM
    EventID: 9010

The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because the desktop composition setting is disabled
    At: 10:01:47AM
    EventID: 9019

The Desktop Window Manager was unable to start because composition was disabled by a running application
    At: 10:01:47AM
    EventID: 9013

Any help with this would be appreciated.

Please start your own thread. Due to the age of this thread, you are not likely to get a response. Posting in this thread will cause confusion for future users searching for an answer.

In the meantime, also proceed with Troubleshooting Steps for Windows 7

       Warning
Some of the steps require that you open up your system, so before doing any of the re-seating and connection checking steps, answer these two questions: Are you still under warranty? Does your warranty allow you to open up the machine to check hardware? If you are unsure of the answers to these questions, contact your system manufacturer. WARNING: Some steps in that tutorial involve removing the system case or system panels and can void your warranty!!!

The steps specifically related to the warning are steps 8, 10, and 11.
