Windows 7: files randomly reverting to earlier state

files randomly reverting to earlier state

Hi,

I'm on a Win7Ultimate computer at work, primarily accessing storage over a network...

A few days ago I started having an issue where I would make changes to a file (always powerpoint files so far), save the file, and then the next day the changes would be gone. The 'date modified' metadata would also suggest that no changes had been made since an earlier date/time.

There would be no crashes, reboots, error messages or anything ... it just looked like I hadn't been in the file or making changes. I had the 'previous versions / windows backup' feature turned off, but I have since turned it on - the problem has occurred in both cases. I have also tried emailing the files to myself (through outlook) and saving them to my desktop ... in both cases the powerpoint files still randomly revert to earlier versions ... I believe in the case of email that the storage server isn't actually duplicating the file, but is simply pointing to the same file from both the email and the file location in windows explorer.

This is incredibly frustrating and causing me huge problems at work - any help would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Did you ever create a "Document Workspace" (under "Publish"). There is some syncing going on with that. Else I can only suggest to copy the latest versions to an external disk or USB stick and disconnect those after you are done.

No, I've never done anything with a document workspace or anything like that. These are really plain vanilla .ppt (or .pptx) files.

Yeah, I've started using a USB stick, but I need to find a better solution. (And part of me is really curious as to how this can happen...incredibly spooky problem.)
