Bootup Failure/Repair Failure/Corrupted Files
Hi Guys,
First post here. I'm very discouraged with my new pc. I just built my first rig from scratch and have been having lots of problems ever since a recent thunderstorm. I made the most idiotic mistake of all time and forgot to plug the PSU AC supply into the surge protector and had it right in the wall. When I came home the day of the storm I noticed the PC was in a strange reboot loop. It would try to power on, the fans and lights would activate for a few seconds and then it would power down. I was very concerned by this but managed to quit the loop by turning off the power supply completely.
The computer worked as normal for 2-3 days but then i started noticing it would hang at odd times when the cpu should not have been under particular stress. Eventually, by the next day the bootups were failing and trying to run startup repair unsuccessfully. I also got messages that files were corrupted. I was unable to boot up in start mode or run a system restore.
I then proceeded to use a Ubuntu Linux Live disk and was able to get to my files and back everything up. After this, I ran a clean install of the OS.
A day or two went by and I noticed similar problems, system instability eventually devolving into boot failures/startup repair failures etc. I gave up at this point and resigned myself to the thought that some part of the hardware itself had been damaged by a power surge and I needed to replace it. I took it in to my nearby Canada Computers who ran a diagnostic and repair service ( ~$80). Much to my dismay, the technician called the next day and said he simply ran a fresh install of the OS and installed some drivers and noticed no problems. Well.. duh! I had just done that... anyway I took it home frustrated, and began reinstalling my software (Chrome, Office, VLC, Logitech Setpoint, Photoshop, Microsoft LifeCam, Avast! Free) and transferring my files back from the external backup.
Anyway, I spent hours getting the OS back to the way i like it and lo and behold, instability kicked in, and now I can't get past startup repair. Safe mode brings me back to startup repair (which always fails by the way). Even trying to book from the Windows 7 DVD just brings me to startup repair. Worst of all, my Ubuntu fix (to go and backup all my files again) doesnt seem to work. It seems to do the normal loading screen and then everything goes black even though the PC is still running. No idea what's wrong with that...
Does anyone have any ideas? I can do a clean install of the OS again (sigh...) and lose some files ( i can live with that... ). However, if its a hardware problem I'm wasting my time. If its a software driver issue or something similar, I still don't really know the source and therefore could have to repeat everything a 4th time? I'm so sick of this... I pray that someone can help me..
