Please do a system file check and let us know the result:
SFC /SCANNOW Command - System File Checker

Do you have system restore point that can restore the system to the time before this issue happened.

    Can I avoid system restore??

I have done the scan before posting the problem. The scan reported some problems and claimed that they would be fixed on system restore. So I thought that would fix the problem. Should I try the scan once again?

I would love to avoid system restore if possible. Thanks

I think if It said that that, I worry that the only choice now is to perform a system restore. You can scan once again but I guess it probably will give you same result.

Thanks for the prompt response. I'd try the scan one more time and let you know the results. If the problem persists, then I would follow your advice and perform a system restore. Thanks again

I restored my system and the problem got even worse. I started experiencing a black screen (after login). I searched for a solution and solved it, only to discover that my Avast antivirus wasn't starting its services. I tried undoing the restore, but the OS gave a silly error about an antivirus program stopping it from undoing.
I've fixed the antivirus problem though. It seems Windows 7 system restore is untrustworthy cos some of my files are also missing. I sincerely hope this solves the problem

You most likely have broken drivers now :/ I would have just done a reinstall instead of the system restore anyways. It copies all the system files back. That way you dont lose any of your precious progs, pics, vids, music, etc. You might need some Windows updates afterwords.

Maybe it's time to consider using different antivirus software? Download and install Avira and then be sure to grab the Avira update. Install the AV and scan. Once you have tried that let us know how it goes, but to me it sounds as if you have a rootkit problem, if that is the case Avira is very effective at taking out rootkit issues.
